people who like this album >pretty much any serious music critic or historian >pretty much any serious musician (be it jazz/classical/rock/whatever) >pretty much anyone who's listened to a large amount of music (outside of pop/rap)
people who don't like this album >some redditors and beatles fans
people who like this album >15-year-olds who just discovered Yea Forums, rym and the """""avant-garde""""
people who don't even think about the existence of this album because of how irrelevant, inconsequential and unnecessary it is >pretty much any serious musician critic or historian
Luis Lee
so what's your favourite beatles album and sub-reddit?
t. listened to over 1000 pop/rap albums on rym and think his opinion automatically matters
Brody Martin
i dont like this album because if it was made 5-10 years later it would've been trashed on and considered albsolute shit, and probably would've fallen under the radar for good reason. it's an important album, but i'll never claim it as a good album.
Chase Campbell
actually its more like this:
people who like this album >cynical / insincere / ironic hipsters who also relish in the idea of misunderstood genius despite how obviously and intentional unpalatable it is...
people who don't like this album >innocent bystanders who simply took the bait of pointing out how insane it sounds... just simply uninitiated.
actually this album rocks, some of the most essential beefheart tracks but.... i dunno I think lick my decals is better the only reason trout mask is such a hit is the infamy of being the most impossible double album and the stupid as fuck monty python-esque quotability "fast and bulbous" probably a decision made by frank zappa
Wyatt Parker
Why can’t I like both Trout Mask Replica and The Beatles?
Luis Ramirez
When I heard Marc Maron do a bit about how "he didn't get it" after finally listening to it after years of hearing the hype, I never watched him again.
People who try to reduce this album to hipsters and art-fags are omitting the truth of what the OP suggested: (whether ironically or not) literally every music critic of the status quo lauds this album. It's not even "edgy" to listen to it. It's not even truly "avant-garde" or else Rolling Stone wouln't say it's the 60th best album ever recorded.

I mean yeah there are people who like it to be cool, but I don't get how any Beefheart fan denies its their best album. There's so much fucking heart and soul in TMR, huge climaxes (end of hair pie bake 1, sugar n spikes drum break), so many laughs and an insane level of dedication from the musicianship. Tracks for days and lots of variation without deviating too much from a central concept. Bits and pieces to assemble slowly through repeated listens; focusing on each instrument on different listens is crazy entertaining. Add to that the nutty backstory of production and it's pretty much the perfect album. I'm glad people find merit in their other records, and I do too, but TMR is just on another plane of existence
Kayden Walker
TMR is just on another plane LMD is pretty fucking close, but I agree TMR tops it out. that band was just playing tightly in a way they could never match up to afterwards
Alexander James
no no no people who like this album >pseudo intellectuals who don't realise it's a meme >newfags who don't realise it's a meme and no I don't fucking listen to the beatles i listen to pic related :
If you actually listen to this album at face value, it predicts a lot of 90s alternative rock genres. You can see flashes of rave up garage music, math rock, and lofi indie folk throughout. Captain Beefheart just made an album out of a bunch of jagged riff pastiches and delta blues croaking.
The most striking example from the album is probably the beginning Dali's Car. The dynamics going on are very similar to Slint and other post-hardcore of the late 80s to mid 90s.
Adam Barnes
Nice bait faggot
Jason Peterson
Interesting point about Dali's Car. That was the first song written for the album, and goes to show the influence the concept of TMR had on abrasive math rock like Yowie. Never noticed the similarity to Slint but you're right.
Zachary Rogers
If you like Trout Mask Replica and the "twangier", less hard-blues based tracks, you should listen to Smog - Sewn to the Sky. I find it crazy how analagous a lot of little snippets from TMR are to many different genres/groups of later decades.
Owen Martinez
Pretty much correct. Intentional or not (it doesn't matter in the end), this album is extremely rich in its mixture of different styles and genres and it's rhythmically interesting pop(ular) music, which I can't say for 99% of Yea Forumscore garbage that this lot listens to. Which to me (as someone who is genuinely passionate about music and who studies it and plays several instruments) is enough to keep me interested and have a good opinion about it.
Oh and people who think Captain Beefheart of all musicians is "unlistenable" clearly haven't heard enough music, specifically outside their comfort zones.
I honestly could do without the dust blows forward and the dust blows back shit
Juan Sanchez
GIVE ME THAT OL' TIME RELIGION
The guitar riff on the second part of that track is godlike. H-C#-D-D-C#-H-H-C#-E-E-E-C#-H-G-G#-E

I was kind of primed for Beefheart after listening to a lot of PJ Harvey and Tom Waits growing up, and also not starting with TMR. I was listening to him for years before I heard TMR so it wasn't so jarring for me. I think hands down the biggest reason people have so much trouble with it is because they start there. I just love all of his shit so much, I hate that TMR is just a meme for so many people now and noone even talks about any of his other stuff.
John Myers
>pseudo intellectuals who don't realise it's a meme your entire chart

It's a funny album, I like it.

Oliver Jenkins
I like how it sounds, and it has a lot going on musically with a sort of genre mix that sounds appealing. I also think it's funny in some places and I like the low quality recordings. I don't know why people have to desparately try to justify that it's okay to like Trout Mask Replica with, "muh polyrhythms," "it took a lot of practice," or, "my favorite critic liked it."
Jordan Lopez
If this album is really that hard for you to like then music just isn’t for you bud
Caleb Lewis
Also forgot to mention the vocals which are alright
Benjamin Taylor
It's just a quirky blues rock album that people only pretend to like because it's by a severely mentally unstable man. Not Available by The Residents is much more of an artistic achievement.
Jordan Baker
