Roky Erickson was essentially a clout martyr.

Everyone is claiming this was a random robbery, but it's clear what was actually happening: his killers were driven to take his life solely for the sake of clout. They wanted infamy of their own and found it in gunning down a 71-year old.

As Roky was taking his final breath, he was surrounded by kids taking video and pictures of him. Why? For clout. No one was taking his pulse, no one was calling 911, everyone was standing around with their phones out as his body was clinging to life.

The moral lesson of Erickson's life story should be a cautionary tale of the horrors of social media and how it's fucked our society beyond belief.

RIP the legend. I just learned about this guy from Jesse Jarnow's books Heads: A Biography of Psychedelic America. It basically just traces American LSD culture from its inception to current day, which means a lot of Grateful Dead obviously, but also a solid amount of 13th Floor Elevators and Holy Modal Rounders.

Elevators were legendary man - they did what meme fans thought the Dead did, which was play tripping virtually every time they played live. Sometimes they would schedule 2 gigs in one day to not waste acid on not playing. Sometimes that didn't work out, but its still legendary. RIP RIP RIP

When the Merry Pranksters came through Austin they were freaked out by how much acid Texas hippies were gobbling. Anyone who thinks “psychedelic rock” means weak hippie noodling needs a dose of 13th Floor Elevators.

If you're into that stuff I highly rec the book I mentioned, though it sounds like you might already know about it/it might have too much Dead for your taste.

Region free DVD playback is also doable in any computer if you get a external (or internal) disc drive (which have to be pretty cheap at this point), you can use that to burn another copy without region coding that'll play on your TV too. That's what I do with Blu-ray imports since an Xbone S is my UHD player and I'm not adding another box to my TV setup just for that, would rather just put another disc in the case that'll work with any player

"In Texas, around the time the Dead were getting together as the Warlocks in '65, a group of heads from around Austin met on a peyote-gather mission to Laredo and formed a new band (complete with an electric jug player/philosopher/dealer/lyricist) called the 13th Floor Elevators. Influenced by the Holy Modal Rounders (among other modern weirdos) the Elevators' own particular blesh leads them to the musical concept they call "the third voice," when seemingly discordant parts create a new effect that none directly intended. Their intention is to musically "play the acid" and carry the word, the flagship band of a small but influential Austin psychedelic scene.

The 13th Floor Elevators play their first show in December 1965 and nearly every one thereafter while tripping, sometimes scheduling multiple gigs per day to maximize the doses and only playing every four days in order to reset themselves before tripping again. When they make it to American Bandstand, Dick Clark will ask who the head of the band is. "We're all heads," electric juggist Tommy Hall replies without missing a beat. Other band-bleshes make their own discoveries, but none will carry the LSD mission as hard as the Elevators, tripping more methodically than even the Dead. Few will burn out as dramatically, either, persecuted in their home state, essentially hiding out between shows, with all the primary band members incarcerated within a decade.

I only got to see him perform live once years ago but would see him around town occasionally. Roky's a fascinating guy. I always liked that first 13th Floor Elevators album, and the documentary on him is really interesting.

That said, I always wanted to like his solo stuff more than I actually do. It is interesting because it's garage rock that's clearly genuinely shaped by schizophrenia, but it's a little simplistic because of that - it's often repeated, simple, vivid, descriptive, but nonsensical lyrics over basic 3-chord garage rock. He has an entire lifetime's discography of it, but I find it hard to even sit through a greatest hits compilation.
