any essentials/recommended chart for this madlad?
I wanna get educated before seeing the new movie.
Any essentials/recommended chart for this madlad?
Rocketman
Everything from his second album through Blue Moves is pretty solid
He was never good.
Just get a Best of album
did he really have songs other than rocketman, bennie, tiny dancer, and lion king shit
He's a singles, not an album artist. Go find a Greatest Hits collection instead.
Here are what I think are his 5 must listen to essentials
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a really solid album
His run from 1970 to 1972 is practically flawless. Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across the Water, Honky Chateau are great albums. Also, 17-11-70 is the one you want to check out if you want to understand how GOAT of a performer he was at his peak.
His hits are of variable quality, although Crocodile Rock should be avoided at all costs. It gives me a headache.
>Crocodile Rock
Literally read those two words and now that bullshit melody thing is stuck in my head
fuck you user
Have you even bothered to find out if that's true?
Also don't listen to Philadelphia Freedom, not because it's a bad song, but the melodies are so catchy you won't get them out of your head for a week and you'll start to get annoyed.
Yellow brick road is his only intriguing album
It's one of the most overrated albums ever. Half of it is filler. He has several superior albums.
>gay rights anthem that dumb burgers mistook for a patriotic tune about the bicentennial
I'm also not a big fan of Bennie and the Jets, though it's still more tolerable than Crocodile Rock. It's a shame that two of his most popular songs are annoying as fuck.
Madman and Tumbleweed Connection have his best songs. Not sure what this "intriguing" trip you're on is about
Yeah that's an obnoxious one.
come to think of it, I don't know why I like Elton john. His shit is kinda dumb and annoying.
I was really skeptical about the movie after the embarrassing joke that was Bohemian Rhapsody, but this is actually starting to look promising. Hope I don't get baited.
The typical American in the 70s didn't exactly know that much about gay people.
Once he got really flamboyant and over the top his music just got too goofy and insincere for my taste, but his early stuff is genuinely incredible. Bernie Taupin was at his best when he was writing surreal beat poetry about cowboys and the Spanish civil war.
That kind of happens to all musicians. Once they have money, they start indulging in over-the-top theatrics and stage costumes. Like, if you'd seen pics of early Jimi Hendrix, he just wore jeans and a leather jacket on stage and it wasn't until later when he had the huge, poofy robes and other malarky.
thanks fellas! now I at least know where to start
These songs, I'm still standing, rocketman, tiny dancer are the only ones I kept on my phone after listening to his 4 most recommended albums. I'm still standing was just a classic I heard on the radio.
Led Zeppelin also pretty much just wore their street clothes on stage in the beginning.
Every song on Madman is a classic you idiot
Just because he's an icon doesn't mean he's good musician.
He paved the way for flamboyant costumes and personalities. I don't know what he did for music (outside of GBYBR)
Its boring without the visuals for me.
100%
elton is a legend and one of the progenitors of today's modern pop music formula. He was one of the first to do it like it's supposed to be done.
So you don't like him is what you're saying
>He paved the way for flamboyant costumes and personalities.
He just went through all the stages that most artists on his level do. Once you've asserted yourself as a songwriter you start to put up more of a show. Yellow Brick Road and Captain Fantastic - which you should listen to if you liked Yellow Brick Road - were basically that.
It's nothing to rack your brain over.
This. Also blue moves is hella underrated. His self titled to blue moves run is fantastic even the lesser albums like "rock of the westies" and "caribou" have classics. I enjoy "too low for zero" but the 80s production can be grating. Also "the captain and the kid" as well as "songs from the west" are really good albums too. Dont listen to the singles only fans. His albums are pretty consistently great in the 70s just avoid everything between blue moves and too low for zero
