Rock has been stiffled by mediocrity for much of the 2010's and shameless rip-off bands like GVF are indicative of this downward trend. Maybe there''ll be a rock-revival renaissance in the 2020's, but that's not likely to happen.

That said, it's not the rock medium that is being rejected in this day and age. It's the band format. For some reason, nobody wants to listen to bands anymore. The singer/songwriter seems to continue to do alright in this era, even if the music is rock. It seems like it's not that people want hip hop and hip hop only. they want acts fronted by solo artists, a category in which hip hop falls.

In niches like metal, noise rock and punk, bands will continue thrive. it's just in the mindie (mainsteam indie) firld that band are noe perceived as lame.
I think it also has to do with that nowadays people seem to not only want to consume the music, but also the artists' personality. in bands, since the music is made by a collective, the relationship artist-listener is less personal.
So, the personality of the artist is now apparently extremely important for music to connect with listeners. Why do are so many sheltered white kids loving rapper personas so much?
