KK Null and Merzbow have been friends for almost 40 years going back the playing at Kid Ailack Art Hall and Gatty in the early 80s
They played a reunion show last September. Null said that the show was recorded and that they plan to record new material
Recent Merzbow albums like Hyakki Echo, Kaerutope and Hermerzaphrodites use lots of digital piano and digital percussion, reminding me a lot of recent KK Null releases

Merzbow own descriptions of his releases for Studio Voice in 2000 (the text is too small for me to read)
Part of an article about new Japanese music by Fred Frith for OP in March 1982. Probably first foreign coverage of Merzbow (at least outside of mailart zines). My images seem to be missing
>Merzbow has been together as an improvising duo for five or six years. For the last two years we've concentrated on recording tapes. Among new-wave rock musicians here there's a certain tendency more and more towards total improvisation, but on what level they're improvising I don't know. Are they using it merely as something new? Or is it more important than that?
>Our background in any case is rock, and we see ourselves as rock musicians rather than 'improvisers.' Since our current interest is in tapes as opposed to performances, the first emphasis is no longer on spontaneity but on making finished statements through the tape medium. It *is* improvised, but that's not the primary concern, and the tape is not *live*- we make modifications. For example, sometimes we have tapes of two performances running at the same time. The recording process is what's important, the microphone is the medium for making the music. When you're dealing with microphones, factors like precise positioning relative to the sound source, the size of the room, and so on are more important than the spontaneous transmission of the sound. Many of the sounds we're using right now come from very small sources that would be difficult to amplify at a concert.
Part Two (incidentally, Frith was supposed to write the liner notes to Yantra Material Action)
>We've been described as combining shamanism with an 'Industrial' sound, but this needs clarification. It's more of a question of a fetish for sound texture itself, and this is the prime mover of our musical thoughts. I'm deeply influenced by Japanese Buddhist philosophy, and verbally we can talk, say, of the belief that there's a living soul belonging to every object. This idea might be felt unconsciously in the music, but we have no conscious intentions as far as the Japanese cultural tradition is concerned.
>I had no formal musical education, but I was always interested in ethnic music, and also musique concrete. I play the drums in a new-wave band, because I like all that, but it's a different realm from what we're doing in Merzbow.
Painting by Merzbow that was exhibited at Los Apson, then auctioned off
Another painting. He did several paintings and you can see them here: merzbow-blog.tumblr.com
The paintings were also published in ROOTS magazine. The auctioned paintings included a CDr with exclusive music.
Flyer for the Hanatarashi barrel throwing show
Merzbow also used to organize shows during the 90s. But like most of the original Japanese noise artist, he later withdrew from the "noise scene".
The show from this flyer appears on the b side of Flare Gun.
he's transitioning to a wise old asian master
Kiyoshi Mizutani is still around. He does feedback EAI performances: youtube.com

Masami and Reiko interviewed Neil Hill of SPK in Tokyo shortly before he died. This was after the rest of SPK took off to England to make it big.
Merzbow contributed a recording of this interview to Hanatarashi for their split album. This resulted in the track Rap The Neil In Tokyo
Nigel Ayers told a story about how Masami sent him a review of a Nocturnal Emissions cassette he did for a glossy Japanese magazine. Ayers was confused since it was only available as consignment from a certain Rough Trade shop.

pls don't bodyshame her, she cute :3
(but for real, transitioning at old age isn't easy)
It's difficult for some people to hear it, but much of noise music and power electronics oozes with emotion.
Some works that display this clearly are:
Con Dom - calling all Aryans
Animal collective - untitled (from stgstv)
Meira Asher - Spear into hooks
Operation cleansweep - power hungry
However, merzbow manages to drain all the emotion from the noise entirely when he produces. Honestly, to best describe it, if you've ever seen the American tv show "Fringe" directed by jj Abrams, there were scenes where they "reanimated" a character in order to interrogate them after death. The movements and speech patterns of these reanimated people appeared forced, deliberate, uncomfortable, unnatural, and undesirable. Merzbows music reminds me of those scenes in Fringe. I really don't like it and I don't know why merzbow, of all noise musicians, gets the attention that he does. The second most mentioned noise musician that I see, William Bennett of Whitehouse, is so much more interesting than merzbow ever will be.
To further drive my point about his music being emotionless, listen to MERZXIU, a collaboration with xiu xiu. Xiu xiu is normally slimy with emotion and you kind of wish they would tone it down a bit (like in Ian Curtis Wishlist), but in MERZXIU, merzbow effectively turns Jamie Stewart's ability to convey emotion to 0. It's horrible!
I haven't seen anything about Merzbow being trans. He basically looks the same as he always has. It's just that as he gets older, he's losing his hair and skin plasticity. So, he's getting that Steven Tyler look.
For the Russian shows, Balazs Pandi was selling a Merzbow & Balazs Pandi cassette limited to only 50 copies. One of you squatting, alcoholic motherfuckers better rip and share it!
