Does anybody have any idea what fills Zach is playing here? I'm assuming it's something revolving around a 9 or 11 stroke roll but even slowing it down doesn't seem to help. Just curious if anyone knows what he plays in this video because it seems like it's his bread and butter whenever you watch him play.
Not entirely aware of his fills. However I do know he uses a lot of double strokes, both in his hands and in his feet. He tends to use this a lot: 1-double bass drum 2-double right 3-double left He moves that all over the kit.
Jack Jones
I thought he didn't play doubles on his hands? Everything I see him play is just singles
Jace Ward
I'm glad this guy finally made it. Imagine putting that much time and effort into your craft and all people ended up knowing you for was Hella.
Tyler Gray
It is hard to spot; a teacher had to help me. I you notice his stuff near 00:13 is pretty much double strokes moving it to the air tom, the low tom, and the ride cymbal.

What is Death Grips?
Aiden Johnson
Death Grips's J-Pop phase was pretty wild.
Logan Bell
Nondrummer here. Is Zach actually a good drummer? He sounds good but does he have any skill or does he just play fast? Kind of like how Bob Dylan has technically a really sloppy harmonica player
Justin Wilson
true, I see it now.
But yeah those blast beats or whatever he starts out on are ridiculous. It looks like he's playing 7 or 9 or 11 strokes but also using his foot to play some of the notes
Michael Cox
>around a 9 or 11 stroke roll what does this mean? drumming sounds confusing
Carson Moore
It’s lingo for the alqueda rudiment he often employs in his fills
Aiden Brooks
>alqueda rudiment what does this mean? drumming sounds confusing
Lincoln Hughes
He's one of the best in my opinion. I loved Tool, and shit that Buddy Rich did, but Zach Hill's ability to find fucked up, chaotic fills that turn into grooves his bands can play on, is just insanity
Jose Perez
He is not actually that good, no. Though he does have a very recognizable voice.
Sebastian Martinez

Tyler Sanders
That's what I'm saying, user. Imagine if all he was known for was Hella, even after putting all this effort into his playing. I'm glad that he's in a band like Death Grips now and people recognise that he's a great.
Evan Watson
hella is my favorite project. The Devil Isn't Red is in my top 5 sure wish spencer seim didnt become a farmer or some shit
Xavier Morales
Why do you say that? Drums aren't my instrument, but from comparing him to others it seems he plays in a mostly very linear fashion and kind of falls apart whenever you introduce verticality, especially more complex cross-rhythmic stuff.
Grayson Thomas
I thought you were referring to the fact he's playing with Slipknot. I heard something about that but didn't look into it to see if it was true
Liam Harris
For most drummers, if you come up with a groove on the Toms or Snare or Hihat, that'll usually be an entire song. When I see Zach Hill play, he will have 4 or 5 of those in just 1 song. and it's all in an odd-time signature, with odd stops. The brilliance he has on the drum set is unmatched. It's like calculated mayhem
Zachary Hernandez
>unmatched The guy from Don Cab is better imo. Much more versatile in the context of a single song
Eli Perez
Depends on what you cualify as a good drummer. Zach's style is based on cramming as much as you can into a bar while still holding a beat; using a lot of double strokes and moving a lot in the kit. He uses a lot of fills, especially in live events, to power up the already raging music he and his buddies do.
Carter Smith
But what I mean is, what's he's doing isn't actually that complicated, it's just a bunch of linear stuff.
James Gray
How should a pianist and vocalist that also plays guitar get started playing drums? Any methodologies that might expedite the learning experience for someone that already knows fundamental music theory?
Jeremiah Bennett
All I mean is that he really deserves the success he's having. I like Hella and Death Grips about equally.
Jonathan Perez
Go to your local university, ask the percussion professor whether there are any former or current percussion students teaching kit or who you could talk to.
Colton Lee
Every good percussionist I know of swear by Four way coordination.
Evan Cruz
True, but coming up with the stuff he does is retarded. Constantly coming up with new fills that are beats/grooves is absolute insanity. It is linear tho forsure
