Well Hip Hop started in ghettos and housing projects, people who wanted to climb the MC ladder where vetted and challenged by other people in the form of battle raps. As a rapper you needed to make sure people not only are impressed by your tight flow but also afraid of you. People dissed each other constantly and this could escalate into fighting and that could escalate even further into stabbings and shootings.
