most bands suck after 20 years desu. happened to weezer, beach boys, rolling stones, rhcp, oasis. even the cure and depeche mode even made some crap albums in the 2000s. but these bands bad later stuff doesn't ruin the legacy of their older work, but i wonder why it does for U2? i bet it's the apple thing

It's been said before, but if you avoid anything after Pop they're pretty good. All That You Can't Leave Behind isn't even that bad, it's just when they started making more safe music. The album after that with Vertigo on it is when it started going to total shit.

They're definitely not as good as The Smiths or The Cure or Bauhaus or Television or Gang of Four or JD or something, but they have their moments. For a band that is A-list stadium tier, they're good. Compared to the post punk greats and the underground, they're average.

they sort of tapered out since sometime in the 90s and now they are a bunch of old farts
i would prefer to see more big bands/groups to go on permanent hiatus at some point and only get back together for the occasional tour playing the old stuff rather than churning out tons of new record, maybe start other projects but leave that successful one as is. a musical piece of art preserved in the period it was created in that milks their now boomer fans for easy profit from time to time instead of shitting all over their own discography with forgettable records

Joshua Tree was good, Achtung was interesting, but their Irish roots made them what they were up until the early 90's.
You here a glimmer of what they could still be in songs like "Beautiful Day" which if given more genuine artistic treatment could be great music that only they really can do.
But instead they caught Vertigo and then it became worse recently when they forced their shit down people's throats on itunes. That just put people off them. Why? It felt like an unashamed commercial push to the point where it no longer felt like genuine art like Achtung.
