When you Sleep, Only Shallow and I Only Said are fine tracks but so far from being in the top tier of loveless, they’re probably at the bottom honestly. Ok then why hasn’t anyone even come close to replicating the feeling of loveless, almost 30 years later. The tracks that have been more successfully imitated are the simple rock ones that are less about texture and more about drive and rhythm, there’s tons of nugaze like that now, but nothing that really succeeds at aping the slower side of Loveless which is usually regarded as the more interesting side.
If you got rid of the distortion on Sometimes it would still be a fantastic song.
Underneath the effects is still good songwriting

it's obvious you've listened to less than ten shoegaze records
that's actually my least favorite part of Loveless; sure, the distortion is nice, but it really feels like a band-aid to cover up what to me sounds like some of the worst songwriting I've ever seen

Also I am a huge shoegaze nerd, I’ve listened to hundreds of shoegaze albums and a lot of them are trash honestly but even the best ones, tend to be either closer to Souvlaki or closer to Only Shallow, even if it’s not derivative the artists that are more ambient like Belong for example, still sound pretty hollow and thin by comparison.

Kevin had two years to fuck around making this album and the reason it sounds like it does is because of all the feedback samples. He literally fucked around for 3 months sampling guitar feedback to fill out the songs. No other band has done that because they didn’t have the talent or the patience to dick around with shit like that.
