Well "rock" is a vague enough term that any statement about "the state of rock in the west" is vacuous. Different scenes in rock are waxing and waning. For example, there are plenty of amazing black and death metal bands out there right now. And basically none of them come from Japan.

To me, Japan excels where melody is concerned at the moment, so it doesn't come as a surprise that most death and black metal are a bit sidelined for now

I'm planning to see as many concerts I can, but I'm a little worried about obtaining tickets. I either have to buy them at the door or use a proxy buyer, because I'm fairly certain you have to have a Japanese address to use plus (Japanese ticketing servics).
Do you have experience with that sort of thing?

Neat. Probably kinniku wasn't active those years. They're back now and they put out 2 amazing albums recently. Tokusatsu was on pause but they're also having some live shows on august too.

Indies L'Arc was the best for sure.
The good thing about Dune and Tierra is that it was basically a continuation of that, afterwards they still released some really good stuff but I feel at some point they stagnated a bit, and went for a very pop, mainstream sound. Gone was the gothy/melodic post-punk stuff from earlier days.
Ironically Hyde is still at the whole "waaa I'm a vampire" thing but it's not the kind of goth I expect from him.
Sakura being with aie from deadman and the other guys is cool as fuck though, I'm glad he's back. He was recently with Malice Mizer in their reunion too (he was Kami's mentor).

Withering took the alternative metal scene of it's time and made it artistic rather than just edgy for the sake of fun. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it does it for me.
Whoa, me too. I haven't found anyone else who does it as well as they did though, with their atmospheric and bizarre yet beautiful production, great sense of melody, and layered noise.

They cited their influences as Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, and Skinny Puppy. I find Marilyn Manson to be boring and the other two to be excellent.

I need to check the CD insert to see if Ryonai himself wrote and produced all the songs. The story of Blam Honey really is tragic, though, with Tatsuya dying and Ryonai having severe health problems and falling off the face of the Earth. I hope he's out there somewhere doing okay.

On the gothic side you have Schwarz Stein, Seileen, GPKism, and the best one which is Velvet Eden.

I actually don't know that many traditional industrial acts from Japan. There's Hijokaidan if you want something like Throbbing Gristle. I actually quite like Hijokaidan's collab with alt idol group BiS, know as BiSKaidan.

Der Eisenrost and Zeitlich Vergelter are probably prime examples, although they didn't release a lot of stuff. They were bands led by Chu Ishikawa, the guy who did the legendary Tetsuo: The Iron Man OST (which is also an industrial essential).
I didn't know about BiSKaidan, but Hijokaidan also worked with Jun Togawa, good stuff.

I just realized who I thought sounded too much like Dir en grey. It wasn't D'espairsRay, it was Rentrer en Soi. But it turns own RoS was mentored by Kyo. I'll give both bands another try.

ReS was actually mentored/produced by Yukari from Baiser. I think ReS changed their sound later on, but their first album is very frilly melodic VK like Baiser. I never liked the vocalist though.
But yeah I think they got along with Kyo afterwards, afterall the ReS members are with Kyo now on sukekiyo.
Many bands sound like DEG anyway. I think DéspairsRay has definitely a DEG-influenced sound, same with other bands like Kagerou, Sadie, Merry. Not that influence is a bad thing but sometimes it can get unoriginal and boring.
Most visual bands wanted to be DEG, but DEG also started wanting to be someone else: Kuroyume, who were also copied by most VK bands in the mid 90s.

I was just referencing that I learned that Kyo and Daisuke (Kagerou) were apparently vocal coaches for ReS's vocalist. I honestly don't know which band I thought sounded too close to Dir en grey, and honestly it doesn't matter, whoever they are, they're better than me. And yeah, they're in sukekiyo, I forgot that was them.
Sadie is pretty close to just wanting to be Dir en grey, but I think they're pretty good. Kagerou was a bit like that too, but unique enough that I'd consider them legendary. Merry I personally find to be completely unique and I hear their influence in a lot of my favorite newer bands like the Gallo, Sibilebashir, and Marco.
