It's pretty obvious why. Suits want to bring the IP back so they can milk that cow further with merch sales. Reboots and remakes are a relatively safe investment compared to new projects. The next step is to bring in people to work on it. This is where nepotism comes into play.
The people who worked on the PPG reboot clearly didn't give two shits about respecting the source material. There were a bunch of immature college kids who cared more about activism than making a cartoon. They didn't even tried to be subtle about it, because they wanted to be seen, to be praised for their bravery by other faggot activists. Even though all they are doing is parroting opinions from all the way to the 70s.
And you know what sucks the most? The original PPG also had its share of activism, but they still had their priorities set on making a show first. It handled the subjects in such a way that regardless of you being too young to get them or old enough to disagree, you could still enjoy the show for what it was. It wasn't just a shallow piece of propaganda.

It wasn't even the worst back in its prime, or even during its inception. The original cartoon cartoons were like the justice league of CN's animation department at the time. There were many other shows that tried and failed to live up to their quality, Cow & Chicken included.
That being said, it's not for everyone. I personally find its artstyle repulsive because I was never a fan of the 90s gross out humor thing. Same reason why I avoided most of Nickelodeon. The Hannah-Barbera inspired cartoons just looked so much better.
