The reason why cs is being pushed so hard is these companies want mindless drones to program their shit for them. You don't even need a degree to be qualified for a job, so going for a degree is a waste of time and money. Salaries are going down and down, and you're just going to be replaced by pajeet number 1 billion, who is willing to work for half your salary. You don't get paid as much with math, but at least it's a stable field and you aren't wasting 4 years of time and money for knowledge you could have taught yourself better and spent time building up a good github page instead of dicking around with obtuse labs written and graded by pajeet ta's imported by your university after they took one intro to english class.

Almost every CS grad will get a job but most won't be that great and will definitely not be what they were expecting, especially when it comes to salary. Entry level programming positions are so fucking oversaturated. The bar is so high and interviews are so difficult these days. You have to be a genius with tons of experience to get in a good company these days. I only got into my company because our startup was acquired. And even I'm not really happy with what I'm getting day-in, day-out. So consider that.

Seriously though, the idea that going to college will get you in is bogus. But it's also bogus when people act like the industry doesn't care about degrees, because it does and it is elitist like any industry. You would be better off doing something else and then spending your free time perfecting your expertise and your ability to perform on the spot, because that is all that matters in an interview room. However from my time in the industry, I feel like even that would be a waste of time. They are too focused on young 20-27 year old college grads who are somehow geniuses who have been coding since they were 12.

I would compare it to trying to join an orchestra when you only started learning your instrument in college and now you're competing with people who've been playing since they were 4. Just go into another field, I know I wish I did.
