I heard that for some of them it was under the threat of death because they don't want to other guys to come along and snatch up the engineering talent. so a lot of times it depended on who got there first.

early on in my career I would hear the name Bob Massengill and he would always be calling for this one or another. I think he was an architect. I never met him but I always wondered what that would have been like. I am sure he is long retired because I haven't heard that name in 20 years.
