Poor people can't afford toilets in urban places. And shitting outdoors is a thing in a few rural places again because of poverty, but it's been around longer, because rural places have been poorer longer, so it's harder to let go of. I've lived in an Indian city for 20 years, right next to the slums, travelled for 4 hours through worse places everyday for college, and never saw anyone shitting outside anywhere. I go to my grandfathers village, which is pretty poor, every summer, and never saw it there either. It's more rare than it's made out to be, and its mostly because of poverty.
