I like(d) Villalobos and Jaar, but I wouldn't say any of their music sounds 'south american' to me. Agree on Mexico,, they have great producers and composers (IMDS, Reyes, Murcof, Esquivel, list goes on). Still not sure what's so "shitty" about pointing out how much richer Brazil's musical catalog is, or was, compared to other SA countries. The fusion of African styles with European classical music and English/American rock was unique, and I cannot think of any other country with so many albums from 50 years ago that don't sound like outdated period pieces, and the influence of MPB all over the world. Sure, other countries had rock and pop + local folk crossovers and whatever, but they tended to be copycats of American/UK acts with stupid spanish lyrics on them.

I also said this, but we're not talking folk music, we're talking "South American" music as in, music that collectively spoke to the continent as a whole. I can't remember the last time any European or American band said they were inspired by cumbia or fulia or bachata, whereas MPB has influenced acts all over the UK and US and yurop. And all in all, the majority of SA folk music has been Americanized and bastardized with Reggateon shit, and the folk music that remains "pure" is only interesting enough to musicologists since nobody has done anything to modernize it

I think you're simplifying it a bit too much lad. Tropicalia/Brazilian rock and experimental, Samba/MPB/bossa nova, musica nova, etc. Brazil has had the good luck of being a big country, wealthy enough to always have a well educated elite that was able to travel and study abroad and came back and brought music from other countries and fused it with their own. They smoked marijuana and worshiped the Beatles and listened to the Platters and deconstructed their own folk music. Meanwhile, to me, Cuban, Dominican, Puerto Rican and all that music feels like the same ol rehashed, virtually unchanged rhythms from the 70s and 80s, with some modernizations, albums don't exist really, all you have are radio hits and dancefloor bangers that are pretty much impossible to listen to at home or sober because you're listening to the same tunes and motifs over and over with slight variations.

It's simplicity, vis a vis the " 'nuum" really makes one wonder if the past vices of the German population, once quenched in past conflicts, finally gave away to an almost catatonic state of sound: stabs of Cm chord ran through a Roland Space Echo™, with added chorus, laid the foundation to an entire genre full of rabid fans with outwardly signs of mild autism, 21 minute songs consisting of bare dub basslines, 4 bars repeating over and over. Contrast this to the 'nuum: Vulgar, expletive lyrics, overly distorted Amen Break variations that get more and more primitive with each iteration, the need to showcase "dread" and loneliness through it's bleak and quasi-comical soundscapes. The English mentality, one might infer, has been in a constant state of PTSD since the Blitz ended, and its constant need to manifest this through unintelligible patois lyrics over some bassline bastardizations is a clear symptom of this. Sure, the Blitz ended more than 70 years ago, but the constant need of "dropping" so called "weapons" on the nodern English dancefloor betrays the veneer of the English upper lip mentality that they work so hard to project.
