I think what makes him great is that he has his own taste and gives his honest opinions. Compare him to someone like fantano who seems to give a 6-8 to almost EVERY album he reviews, like he is trying to be middle of the road and not upset anyone too much. Regardless of whether you agree with him or not, he doesn't bend his opinions to anyone besides himself, and honesty is the most valuable trait a critic can have imo. (Christgau is the same to a lesser extent)
