The best thing to do is look up the catalogues of record companies and see what they were releasing at the time. SubPop of course, CZ, Cruz, even SST at that time.
Them and early AIC remind me of a darker version of Guns N' Roses.
Also, OP, check out Failure's Fantastic Planet and Hum's You'd Prefer an Astronaut.

Man you're bringing me back. If you like Gruntruck, they had a group before that called Skinyard which I think were better,
I'm adding Olivelawn to the list, also if you can find a band from St. John's Newfoundland called Bung who had two CDs and toured a little, they were good too. Eastern Canada had a grunge moment for a few years after Sloan and Eric's Trip drew some attention to the area.
