It's been pulling search results from Bing. Bing has thrown many sites under the bus. If you are having trouble finding pages you could find before, CONTACT DuckDuckGo, and give them the info.
It's a known issue- they have been scrambling to fix things.

A lot of it is still proprietary in the sense it is code written by DDG. There are several reasons why this stuff isn't open source, primarily spam and competitive. So i think no.

oh btw selling ads probably wouldn't work as a revenue model because 1) ads would not be private then and 2) ad companies can demand changes
Also 3) not sure how to improve the product without getting data from users so that's another issue.
