Mercast, further thoughts

So I got triggered to post here after reading through not one but two Merzcast / Merzgate / Merzcontroversy threads.

Serious misinformation going on, I thought.

First, regarding the idea that the Merzcast were profiting from Merzbow. Um, no. "Images used as Patreon bait". Double no. These are, in a word, lies.

I say this as an avid Merzcast listener who was all set to sign up for the Patreon. Not because I was interested in any of the old Merzbow images. I seriously couldn't give a flying fuck. No. But because I wanted to support serious Merzbow enthusiasts who were doing the good work. For instance, bringing in interesting people like Eldon M, Philip Best, GX Larsen, to talk about noise, and Merzbow. And also, I thought, helping to spread the good news about Merz.

The good news is this, and it is not minor: the laptop era of Merzbow is, gasp, NOT total shit.

Let's just let it be said that the vast majority of self-identified "serious noise fans" think that Merzbow has SUCKED SERIOUS DONKEY DICK since he went laptop. The Merzcast, incredibly, did a significant service in helping to reverse these sentiments. For example, in me. I was all set to actually consider picking up some new Merzbow FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 20 FUCKING YEARS. Now? Not so interested.

Let's not forget that controversies like this, involving Merzbow, are not new. Please refer to the Self Abuse compilation from 1996, Music Should Hurt, and the Killer Bug (Kazumoto Endo) track Brain Police Besieged Parkside Corp. As I recall, Parkside Cord is Akita's old address. One guess as to where Endo was going with the "Brain Police" reference. Incidentally, the best track on the album is the Killer Bug. The Merzbow is quite good too, actually very good, but KB simply blows Merz away. So in a nutshell, even in Japan, even almost thirty years ago, Akita was VERY WELL KNOWN for his opposition to the idea of the free flow of ideas.

Incidentally, I've never met Greh or Wolf Eyes. I have two Hive mind discs, they are good. I have two or maybe three Wolf Eyes tapes or discs, they are ok. I'm not really a fan. I LOVE Merzbow way more.

Again, I'm not Wolf Eyes nor Hive Mind nor a fan of either project. But I really hate this utter nonsense. Stop it. Please. If you hate noise, fine. Shut the fuck up. Go away. Leave it to those who care. Eg those who listen, and listened, with great interest to Merzcast. Simply because they were interested in noise. That such a hard idea to digest?

Never used reddit and my apologies for the aggressive stance. Perhaps I've had too much to drink. Perhaps I should check out reddit. Perhaps it is better suited to my ranting nature.

But there were two whole threads worth of serious dissing of the Merzcast, several posts of which were, in my obviously rather triggered opinion, seriously out of line. This is my attempt to address that.

I will conceded that I'm probably winning my cause no friends. But hey, how noise of me.

Interesting, isn't it, that the episode that got the whole thing taken down has nothing to do with copyright, and everything to do with Akita trying to revise history.

Hey, I don't blame the guy. We all make mistakes. But that's one hell of a long-term mistake my friend.

This comment burns. I VERY SINCERELY doubt that one single patreon subscriber gave a flying fuck about the mail art. What they cared about was "supporting the cause", however mis-directed.

What we get here, in the apparently hallowed spheres of fourchan, is how these guys are such dicks for, well, actually giving a flying fuck.

In the Merzcast, Greh tries hard to play the part of the unwilling convert who has "come around" to the side of the laptop era. It is marginally persuasive. But it is sustained.

In one Merzcast, P Best suggests, jokingly, that a particular tape cover be reserved only for the subscribers, against Greh's good humored protestations. Perhaps they ran with the joke. Honestly, NO ONE COULD EVER HAVE GIVEN A SHIT.

So here you will say to me, "who cares"?

Well, why don't you answer that. The episodes have been taken down from multiple sources. And that is quite a large number of sources. Everything deleted. Vamoose. Kaput. Sayonara motherfucker. Etc.

Actually, it's more a matter of encountering one kind of not-entirely-necessary censorship after another. The Merz-self-censorship is just the icing on the cake.

I did read with interest all of the #merzcast twitter comments. Perhaps there were a number of "liberal" whiteboy manbabies posting there, who am I to judge? Of the three of four Japanese persons commenting, there was no support for Akita, only criticism. And the posters were not all male. Oh well. Man and women babies.

Okay, here I am, near the end of the wine bottle and ironically sobering up. Recognizing that I have not helped my cause but at least content that I don't really have a cause other than to rant. In that capacity, eg ranting, I think have rather successfully achieved the goal set.

So to curtail this rant, just slightly. I respect Akita's decision, as an artist. But I've yet to come around to accepting the consequences of the decision. Plus there's the issue of decorum, not like I'm one to talk, but I think there would have been much cooler ways to resolve this and Akita couldn't be bothered. He saw red, now I see red and all we see is red. I'm sure cooler heads will prevail in the long run but it's sometimes nice to rant.

And I am very far from accepting some of the professions of support for the Akita decision. If someone would care to explicate the error of my ways, I would be happy to attempt to see where I have gone wrong.

in the grand scheme of things neither party was especially great at communicating, but there seems to have been a tendency for merzcast and merzcast fans to try to blow things up into a Huge Deal while masami himself just wanted to get over it, and that's what led to the general consensus in those threads

Well yes I would agree with that. But see, the Merzcast is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. It's run down the curtain and joined the bleeding choir invisible. Bereft of life it rests in peace. This is an ex-cast.

And yes, I'm annoyed about that. I don't need anyone to support it. I'm more on the "trying to offer an alternative fourchan thread to the other two that seem so dismissive of the Merzcast" sorta thing.

I apologize if I seem to be annoyed at the other posters in this thread. I don't think that I am. However, I am annoyed with some of the posters in the two other threads to which I have referred. The persons in this thread, thus far, have been pretty cool, thank you very much.

The irony to me, especially as I've mentioned one of the critics refers to the long-deleted Troniks forum, is that that in both cases there was ONE SPASTIC INDIVIDUAL who obliterated the source of information.

I personally find that irritating. And intellectually insulting.

In the Troniks case, it was probably a fourteen year old kid. (I have no idea, actually, but that is my suspicion.) In the Merzcast case it is a grown man behaving like a fourteen year old kid. In both cases, the result is obliterating a tiny source of light for so many who give a shit about a tiny pinch of snot on piece of dirt, way beneath the radar of anyone who could should and would ever matter about anything in the grand scheme save the scheme of those who care about that tiny smudge of snot on the dirt. AKA noise.

For someone to come along and get all huffy and starchy about it. I dunno. I mean. He called it "Lowest Arts". For starters. Does he not, ever, accept the outlying aspects of what any of this means. Just before I turn in for the evening, is there no one who will offer support for Akita's concerted, and successful, attempt to shut down a forum that does not agree with how he wishes to represent his legacy? Is there no one to come out and say,

"Hell yeah, censorship is awesome! Let's kill all dialogue. Because, dialogue is for chimps. And whiny manboys."
