IQ and "getting" music -- even ultra complex music -- are not related.
Lemme give you a real-life story.
It's 1977. My first girlfriend is one of NINE children in a conservative Methodist family. Most of the kids were above average in intelligence. My gf was 3rd in her high school class. One of the kids was a 19 year old retarded boy. Not even mildly retarded. Full-blown. He'd have seizures, temper tantrums, the whole 9 yards. But this motherfucker could play piano. Like Billy Joel. Or, more appropriately, like Mozart. He was a fan of classical music and could play anything by ear. Self taught on the piano. Further, he also wrote originals. But, the son of a bitch would never perform the originals for his family (or anyone else), but he would play *fragments* like Brian Wilson. He had a piece called "Florida" because for him, Florida was Mecca. Florida was his personal paradise. When people were around, he'd play 10 to 30 seconds of it. It was stunning! Then he'd stop. But, there were times at night when he'd go to the piano and not think anyone was in earshot and he'd play the entire Florida piece. It made my gf cry it was so good.
So, you talk IQ. I don't know what my then-girlfriend's brother's IQ was, but it couldn't have been very high, and yet, he played piano far better than me. And he wrote stuff more complex than me. And I was an honors student.
So there's that, for what it's worth.
