I don't understand why he is constantly attributed as a 'genius'. I feel he is competent but nothing more, and this is coming from someone who enjoys The College Dropout a lot. If you look at RYM, he has 7 fucking bolded albums and two of them are Yeezus and Graduation.

only person who calls him a genius is himself and 15 year olds lol

>"genius"
>his songs people love most are mostly mashups of samples of other people's music

nobody:

kanye: i'm a genius

lol

He's just very aware of aesthetics and how to achieve what he wants to stylistically.

He's gone through so many styles from project to project, often times introducing totally new sounds to the mainstream in a way few/no people were doing before that point.

If he's a genius at anything it's being able to see trends. His taste is just really sharp, and keeps him in the pocket in a game where most artists fall off in their late 20s/early 30s.

Also very few people have had their hands in so many significant albums over the years
>Common - Be
>Jay-Z - Blueprint
>College Dropout
>LR
>808s
>MBDTF

all of those albums had a massive cultural impact, with Kanye playing a pivitol role in that.

I don't think a simply "competent" musician can be that consistent, it's just not possible.

If it's not readily apparent then I'm not sure how to explain it to you. I guess you have to know how music is made and how difficult it is, especially when it comes to sampling. Kanye's ability to hear the music of another person and completely rewrite it is like otherworldly. You said you like College Dropout? Check out the original songs sampled on that album. Power of Love by Blackjack is probably the wildest reworking, and the Luther Van Ross sample on Slow Jamz is soooooo smooth. MBDTF is literally a piece of fine art, like if it was a painting it would be next to Da Vinci. The amount of effort put into that project, the hundreds of tiny details on every single song, idk man just keep listening to his stuff and hope it clicks

a lot of people expect his music to be complete lil wayne tier trash because of his persona and overrate it once they find out it's decent.

seconding this. his ability to sample is really showcased on these 4 albums:
>Common - Be
>Jay-Z - Blueprint
>College Dropout
>LR

I've been called an innovative producer by others before, but I'll NEVER be able to sample like he does. No matter how good I get. It's just something he's born with. There are just people like J Dilla, Qtip, Madlib, and Kanye that are able to manipulate/collage pre-existing melodies with otherworldly precision... it's pretty amazing.

And as for MBDTF....I though that record was pretty overrated when it came out (really just a reaction to the hype), but lately I've just been listening closely to it and...christ the amount of work that went into JUST the beats on that album is...it's really an amazing achievement in art to be able to direct such a massive undertaking without losing sight of the original vision amidst the chaos.

As someone who's pretty embedded into the avant-garde art/music world myself, it really irks me when, say, Bill Kouligas trash talks Kanye's artistry. Say what you want about his personality, but he will be remembered as one of (if not THE) the preeminent artists of the early 21st century.

this is all a toungue and cheek meme in an era of ironic internet humor, everything is about hype, anyone who actually believes it has room tempertture iq anyway or does not actually take music seriously and uses it as background noise or boner feels

its a fad that will die when hes around 50 and will reemerge in a grammy ceremony out of "respect"

i love how people say stupid shit like if it wasnt for him wed have no cudi or drake (since they cant actually make a claim related to making music) as if the world gives a shit if we didnt get a cudi or drake we would be perfectly fine, if not better without thier vapid fans, and this is coming from someone who enjoys the two from time to time

these are the kind of posts i come to Yea Forums for, well said guys

>I guess you have to know how music is made and how difficult it is, especially when it comes to sampling.
This is the most incorrect statement ever made, especially considering the sheer magnitude of braindead retards who know absolutely nothing about music or making music and blindly worship Kanye as the next messiah. His sampling sucks ass, he literally takes beautiful, powerful, moving songs and then either emotionally deadens them by making them sound all stupid and chipmunky, like with the Chaka Khan song, or ruins them rhythmically by chopping them up, like with the Ponderosa Twins song. All that and his lyrics are fucking terrible, and make it clear that he has close to no intellect, not to mention the emotional depth of an eight-year-old. He probably doesn't have an IQ beyond 100, and is one of the dumbest people ever to be publicly accepted as a "genius." How can people pretend a genius when he made the song "I Love It"? That's hands-down the worst rap song ever made. It has a shit melody, abhorrent lyrics devoid of any cleverness or imagination whatsoever, and it's misogynistic to top it off, so it's not just bad, it's also bona fide evil. Kanye West is a fucking retarded faggot and I hope he dies in his sleep tonight.

Yeezus is one thing. When you're making music, every step along the way is important. A lot of times though, that means there are some things where you're working like a maniac that doesn't have enough time to sit down and think about it. It's not about me personally being lazy, it's about the music as a whole. It takes time to think on and reflect; it takes time to be able to work on songs over and over again in preparation for those next big album cuts.

Why are you complaining about dumb music being popular?

Surely if you're smart you'd realise that half of all people are of below average intelligence, and younger people are more likely to have shit taste because they're undeveloped.

It's like complaining that children's movies lack nuanced character development. It isn't made for you, it's made specifically for brainlets.

That's exactly the problem. He's never going to pull those aesthetics from within. His abilities lie entirely in his team having the intuition to limit the options placed before him so he doesn't completely run away with himself. His alleged genius is a carefully curated product.

what is a bolded album

I think by virtue of not realizing this, he must not be that intelligent.

funny how that works.

>He's never going to pull those aesthetics from within

I think you and I are using totally different definitions of aesthetic

The king crimson song that he sampled for power has a completely different aesthetic than power does. One is vintage prog rock, the other is maximal hip hop.

My point is that he can take a clip of music from a completely different style/vibe, and then manipulate it to work in the context he's going for.

And even besides all that, if the end product is music that consistently resonates with people (both the masses AND critics) decade after decade, why be critical of the process?

RYM

yes but what it means

Apparently, your definition of aesthetic boils down to connotative nonsense words like "hip-hop", "prog" and "vibe". Just because everyone is doing something doesn't mean it's okay.
