why do EMGs get so much hate with people saying "durr they don't let the tonewood through"? they sound good, and with passives you don't hear much of the tonewood either because it barely makes any sound
all it is, is a low output humbucker with a preamp. are people cramming them against the strings so the preamp clips and neglecting the 18v+ mods?

I'm in the market for a new amp and am totally swamped by my options. Help me /gg/ Things I am considering >Marshall DSL40 i hear it's trash unless playing really loud which I will not be doing much >Vox AV30 Seems to have everything I want, just doesn't do any of them as well as the amps it's modeled after, I hear the high(er) gain channels are mediocre at best >Orange Micro Dark fantastic, I love the sounds it spits out, only problem is it doesn't seem very versatile, only 1 channel >Orange Dark Terror same pros/cons as micro dark, variable power output seems like a major plus for indoor use, I would prefer this to the micro dark, seems more convenient and also I like the tone more, but is it worth the extra $350??
Some people have suggested to me >Hot Rod Deluxe >Fender Bassbreaker >Vox AC30 none of which seem to be my cup of tea (though I gotta say they're pretty) I have zero experience with amps in head form, only dealt with combos I play primarily Alice in Chains (both the extremely dirty and clean stuff) and Ozzy (w/ Randy Rhoads) help me /gg/ I set aside the money to buy an amp like 3 months ago and I'm losing my mind in the uncertainty

I would like a spare for my main guitar. What would be the best way to get one? Must have: >6 strings, regular scale length >hardtail >24 frets >HH, passive, 4 leads so I can mod them for parallel / series switching; currently use DiMarzio Air Zone and Air Norton >strat body shape >no knobs in the way of my pinky when palm muting / playing high strings >medium neck, small fretboard radius (so no flat Ibanez shit) Currently have a MIJ DXMG with different PUs and blocked-off tremolo. All in all it cost about 700 € (500 for the guitar, 200 for pickups). I was considering buying a JS-22 and swapping all the hardware and pickups but I'm skeptical about build quality on MIC instruments.
Luis Carter
Is there something a semi-hollow body electric guitar can't do, or would I be safe in buying one?
I currently own an Epi LP, but been thinking about buying a semi-hollow since I hear they have a pretty warm and rich sound. But are there any particular pros/cons to playing one?
First examples that come to mind are the 335s by Epi/Gibson or an ESP/LTD

I can afford a Gibson, but I don't have access to a guitar shop anywhere remotely near me. Should I just go with Epiphone if I can't try a Gibson in my own hands? The quality control is really concerning to me, I don't want to spend all that money on an instrument and then have it be worse than the version which is 1/3 of the price. Anyone know if the SG G400 or G400 PROs are better? I don't really care for the coil split since I have a strat, but I hear the 400 PRO pick ups are quite good?

this but the pickups
i'm never happy with the pickups, probably because they get hyped up online with recordings of mic'd amps and then when you get them home they sound completely different unless you put your ear against the cab
EMGs were the least disappointing because people shit on them online but they're actually good. still shit though.
Brayden Ross
What pedals pair nicely with a Hofner Violin bass? Looking to build a decent pedalboard. My rig so far is my Boss tuner into the Agular Tone Hammer and finally into my Fender Rumber 100 amp combo.
If you like the Orange but are worried about only having one channel, couldn't you use a pedal as your second channel?
I have the Epiphone G-400 I got on sale used for what it was worth it was a decent purchase. Long story, I missed out on Iommi Signature SG which is a bitching guitar if you could find one. You can't go wrong with any of the Epiphone SGs they're all great. Never played a Pro but the Custom is so so sweet. Their faded version is another option for you. My regular 400 I had to replace a lot on it for one, I changed the bridge and got me some 59 Model Duncan pickups. I'm probably going to replace the neck one day.
If money is no issue you should look into getting the Gibson. Even as they go bankrupt I like the options on their higher end stuff. For example, I love Buck Dharma's tone so I would get the SG Standard Tribute. The most important thing is you trying it first. The feel of the guitar is important.
If an amp has an effects loop, you can play into the teturn as a clean channel. I don't think anyone sells a footswitch for doing that, but it's easy to make.
You might need a booster or a volume control built into the footswitch depending on the amp though. Or just use your guitar's volume.

Modelers and modeling software will give you dozens of amps for the price of one and nobody will be able to tell the difference until they see you don't have an actual amp
Only after they see it does it sound "sterile", "soulless", "lifeless", and "plastic". So what you want to do is get a gutted shell for some old vintage fender shit, keep the speaks, and stuff all your gear where the tubes used to be. >yeah bro, i have, uh, tubes, yeah, tubes, uh, salvaged from old radio stations >it's how i get the vintage tone >its not stock at all, this amp is heavily modified, i really made my own sound here >i don't know what kind of tubes they are, but i salvaged them myself, i'm that indie >no you can't see them This works for everything including EMG pickup covers. Get ones with the faux pole pieces that look like pickups. The EMG branding isn't visible from a distance and people will think you have seymour duncans and now they're exceptionally clear instead of sterile. Also don't forget to tell them your guitar has some funky tonewood hidden under the paint (which is nitro, even if it isn't) and chuckle to yourself as they all agree on how great your tone is.
This is a good idea for people that get made fun of a lot

What are you using it for? Chances are a 30w tube amp will be too loud like 90% of the time unless you're playing outdoors or in a big packed-out venue, and no one wants to be 'that' guitarist who always drowns the rest of the band out.
Regardless, I know they get a fair amount of shit these days but Vox are still my favourite. A friend once described them as fender amps that smoke a pack of cigarettes a day and he's totally right (though whether or not that tone appeals to you is another matter).
The neck is a usually a lot thicker, but that shouldn't take long to get adjusted to. I personally think they're the best guitars, you won't find that particular warmth and rich sustain with any other type of guitar.

Always practice with a metronome.
Learn how to pick single notes properly using even up and down strokes. Find a video on youtube showing you how to hold the pick properly and how to execute the technique properly. This is JUST AS IMPORTANT as learning and memorizing chords.
Don't avoid using your pinky, it's hard at first but it'll pay dividends in spades later on.
Always practice with a metronome
It's easier to hold down a note near the fret than in the middle between. I spent years thinking proper intonation required my finger to be in the middle of the fret. This is wrong.

My hand is angled improperly, my thumb runs along the length of the neck instead of anchoring squarely, sometimes I use my thumb for cheap barre chords, I have no pinky strength and can't do four-notes-per-string at ALL, and I can't alternate-pick very well. If money is no object, get the Mesa Boogie 25.
There is an insane amount of versatility in shaping tones across its 2 channels. Mesa is renowned for gainier styles of guitar music (as it should - it's fantastic for it) but the clean channel is just as capable. I mostly play a lot of fuzz/noise oriented stuff through it and it's top-notch. Awesome if you skip between playing different styles and want the freedom to experiment while having the ability to jam or play small gigs with it. Wonderful tones at low volume too - especially for a tube amp.
I'm using a VST of Sansamp BOD but, while it sounds good, it doesn't have that "mic'ed cab" sound

Hey guys. Just hit my work anniversary recently so I'll be getting a pay-raise and possibly a bonus to boot.
I want to put it towards a good Jazzmaster for shoegaze/ambient/noise-rock sounds - but is it more worth my while to wait for a reasonably priced ($1400-1500) AVRI 65 to get listed online and then upgrade the stock bridge and pickups, or should invest in getting a 60s American Original instead?
Or, alternatively, buy a Classic Player Model and shell out the cash to mod it until the pricepoint matches that of an AVRI model?
As much as I'd like to buy one of these I keep reading of so many problems. Like what the fuck is this? I've never heard an amp make this type of noise

Nice guitar but that Deven Townsend throw pillow is pretty sus.

Well basically long story short is Fender overhauled all the MIJ models in 2015 and the new ones coming out over the past while are great. You can find a 'Traditional' or 'Hybrid' model. I like the hybrid models cause it has the big vintage neck shape but it also has bigger frets and I believe locking tuners iirc.
This is just one of the newest ones, if you go on the Fender Japan website you can see more. But basically just search for 60s Traditional or 60s Hybrid. The specs are on the Fender site. I played my friends and it feels infinitely nicer to play than any of the newer American ones that I tried, the only downside is they come in a really shitty gig bag but the quality of the guitar itself is top notch.
Ian Perry
didnt get it also why you dont fuckin wash your hands
Get a squier standard stratocaster. You could probably find one used for 170-180 shipped. If you want you can spend an extra 50 bucks and get a yamaha pacifica 112v or a squier vintage modified stratocaster.
The vintage modified has better pickups than the standard and the yamaha pacifica is really well made.
Tyler Wright
Something's up with the built-in reverb methinks (I don't use mine, but a reverberation machine instead). Regardless, Mesa is quite reliable when working with their warranty so they'd probably service or replace it if it happened within 5 years of getting it.
Not an expert on the Mark V 90W models though. I use the 25W which came out years after and I've been hard-pressed to find issues with it. Been thinking of trying out a Triple-Crown model sometime in the future though since those seem to be getting a ton of praise since being released a couple years back.
Brody Morgan
That really got to you huh Sam?
William Cooper
Fuck, that thing looks sleek. I'd still probably swap the bridge but are the stock pickups worth keeping around for a bit upon arrival (i.e. do they come close to matching the brightness of vintage JM pickups)?
Thanks for the tip-off. Never even considered this.
Owen Davis
Yeah, I've heard a lot less problems with the smaller Mark V amps so far. Its always been the full size one that seems to be a pain in the ass, I think just cause it has so much shit going on in it. The TC amps look cool, basically hot rodded Marshalls with a more Boogie voice. Almost the best of both worlds it seems. I've had enough money saved for the longest time but I can never decide or justify buying a higher end amp yet but maybe in the next couple years.
Jaxon Howard
That's because you're a retard. But you're welcome nonetheless.
Sebastian Sanders
The stock pickups are more vintaged voice, they're actually an American made pickup I believe. But yeah they're really good, they have the same rounded fingerboards edges as the American Pro and the same smooth satin finish on the neck. The Traditional has a gloss finish instead and the smaller fretwire.
If I do decide to invest in a TC-100 in the future (which I could potentially use for practice too since it has built-in attenuation down to 3W), I imagine I'd trade in my current 25W model, but it's running superb for me and I have plenty of other gear I want to own before then anyhow, so I'm quite satisfied. Honestly, just see if you can find a place that has a new or used on in stock nearby (or order it online and try it for a few days before sending it back if you hate it) and see how your ears take to it.
I wouldn't be staved off by a few user videos though. It's Mesa, so 95% of the time you get what you pay for. Good luck my dude.
I've got a guitar that is absolutely annihilating my fingers. I've been playing for about 7+/- months 2-4 hours a day, and have learned a few songs but every now and then I find myself muting a string. What should I do? You are right but acoustic guitar strings are generally heavier though.
Noah Brown
If his action is way too high, then yes it's the guitar
Are the strings too high off the fretboard? Slip a quarter under the strings at the 12th fret. There should be just a little space in between on acoustics. Test all the strings. If the neck is straight and the strings are still too high, the bridge will have to be filed down.
You must not know how to play barre chords yet. Don't worry little man, you'll get there some day. :^)
Barre chords on an acoustic with high action will exhaust your fingers very quick.

First I’m sam and now I’m in high school? How many shadows are you going to swing at today? You didn’t even defend your wife when I called her stupid lol
Hudson Gomez
That action is pretty high, so buzzing shouldn't be an issue.
That leads me to say the frets probably need to be leveled and polished. If some frets are too high, then the fret behind them will buzz. Unfortunately It's not cheap to have done and whoever does it will put new strings on it, driving the cost up further.
As for the action issue: If the neck is straight already, then the saddle needs to be lower, and possibly the nut too. On acoustics, the only way to lower the saddle is to file it down.
Overall, you should take your guitar to a luthier to have it "set up". If you don't think the guitar is worth putting money into, you could try to do it yourself. It's risky and time consuming if you aren't experienced though.
Oliver Kelly

Is it sane to just buy a 25W rumble bass amp starting out?
I’m only gonna be practising alone. I’m tempted to buy 100W for later on down the line but maybe it’s better to just keep to a 25W amp for myself now and maybe if I practiced fairly quietly with someone and then actually drop some money into a huge amp when I get good?

(semi related rant but the worst shit to me is when people say just try it out but as a beginner that doesn’t work bc I have no idea what sounds good or plays well)
Joshua Long
Like said, I would look for a Yamaha if you want something affordable. The FGX800C is supposed to be a really nice guitar for the price, $300.
You would probably be happier doing that instead of getting a setup. You can always keep your Epiphone as a backup, for travel and such.
Get a Katana. You get so many options when it comes to amps and effects. You can fine tune and figure out what you want/need to get your sound without having to sink thousands into gear.

Since when has it not been. Fuck off and contribute or fuck off and shut the fuck up and quit bitching and moaning like your mom
thanks man I think I'm just gonna go search for another guitar.
Lincoln Davis
brothers, ive been playing eaay deep purple solos lately and my forearms are on fire. why? ive never felt this before, it's not a carpal tunnel type of burn
Elijah Robinson
lots of bending? its normal, just take a day off if you're worried about it
Guys im looking to buy my first guitar and amp, been looking at used options around me and found a yamaha eg303 and blackstar core v2 for 100 bucks. Should i go for it
Carter Bailey
Thx. The only Gib headstock that will never, ever break.
And you're saying they can't do blues or jazz? Emg 85 is great for blues lead playing. David Gilmour uses emgz. Youre the one trick pony. Not the pickups.
Hunter Cook
Bela Fleck uses 81/85 in his electric banjos.
Xavier Jones
That's very interesting. Emg haters btfo

you'd better lose yourself

Does anyone know what the range of a guitar is? As in from C1 to C5? Also what E is the open low E string? E2? E3? I'm know what all the notes on the fretboard are I just don't know where they live in the range of music.
They kind of feel like a tradeoff in a way. They're not as slick as the brand I used before, which I don't like. But they're slightly flattened, which I kind of like. They're ok, but I'll probably go back to my old brand. I have not tried nyxls because I hate D'Addario with a passion.
Blake Torres
Why do you hate daddario? Nyxls feel different from their regular strings. I was a fan of their regular strings but ever since using nyxls I really can't see myself using anything else. They really can bend much more
Bass bros, get some fucking tapewounds now. I just put labella black tapes on my jazz and i cant stop cumming.
Ian Hughes
Higher frequencies come out more with strings suspended between stiffer, denser materials. Soft shit dampens the vibration much faster and more effectively. You can try this yourself.
The contrast in density and hardness between all maple and all mahogany guitars making maple sound bright/twabgy is one of the few easily heard tonewood differences. Probably the only one, period. Metal turns that up to 11, but maple is already at 10.
and then there are people who think fretboard material affects tone lmao
Tone aside it'll be a very stable neck that will last a fucking lifetime, granted its made right from the start
Adam Carter
I'm thinking bout doing this for the bass vi imma cop. Since you seem to know about bass what the heaviest gauge I should use for a bass vi?
Not sure to be honest. The bass vi looks like kind of a wacky thing. I would just look at the nut grooves to see how much bigger i could go I guess.
Jonathan Rivera
Well I will most likely end up changing most of the hardware including the nut. So I will probably buy a bone blank and fab the slots myself. I just want it to sound as bassy as possible.
