Who had the better version of freezing moon Dead or Attila, I’m personally biased to Dead but I just like the sound of old school black
Black metal
Dead,
Attila sounds like a frog and not a cool frog like Inquisition.
I strongly prefer Dead in general, but for Freezing Moon I hate to say it, but I actually think I have to go for Attila. Dead was always a much stronger vocalist, but he's also much more conventional, and with him Mayhem sounded much closer to Venom and Bathory. Attila's vocal style makes them feel a lot darker... and honestly the biggest thing is that it's harder to understand him, which helps a lot because the lyrics to Freezing Moon are so amateurish and awkward. To Dead's credit, it takes skill to sing like that and still be intelligible, but when he's clearly saying "everything is so cold, everything is so dark" I can't help but cringe a little.
Attila because I like his performance more
I've never seen him bleed on people
that is a very strong position bonus points for health hazards lol
this is the best version
Attila's performance is more unique, dynamic, and honestly emotional (listen for that extra bit of inflection he puts on the "It's Nightttttt Again" part.) So his performance.
bat lord
I just put on that Vinyl ha
freezing moon is a terrible song. i hate black metal
no you didn't
that's not the same
You’re right apparently I overpaid for glasses because they sure didn’t fucking work my bad I’m sorry
the fucking 12 year old on Youtube who covered it with his band
There's a lot of gray area between the two genres and early black metal was very influenced by death metal. But the genres are very distinct - death metal is more percussive, usually more technical/virtuosic, has cleaner production, and has a lower vocal style, while black metal has big washes of sound, is more atmospheric, has screams/shrieks/rasps, is usually simpler...
I grew up on punk music, and it's interesting looking at it from that angle/context, because in death metal I hear a lot of beatdown hardcore, NYHC, etc., while in black metal I hear more post-punk, goth, and crust punk.
This is actually an okay breakdown: youtube.com
While there are obviously a lot of bands that walk the line, like Dissection, Behemoth, and war metal bands like Archgoat, there are also black metal bands that are about a million miles away from death metal like Burzum, and there are death metal bands that don't sound anything like black metal like Suffocation.
I also want to add, when I was a teenage indiefag, to me hearing De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas for the first time at 16, the first comparison my mind jumped to was MBV's Loveless because of the big washes of sound and the mood. It's obviously a lot darker and more metal, but since all I knew back then was punk, indie, and early rock, the shoegaze connection was apparent, and back then I had no idea about atmospheric bands like Burzum, let alone Alcest.

This is the best version of the song, by far. However I prefer Attila generally.
I personally find both genres offer really cool sub genres as well, post black is very interesting and so is tech death
How old is too old for listening to and playing black metal?
Eh, I think there are sort of two answers for this. Being into black metal is cool when you're in high school. It stops being cool and starts being weird and geeky when you're in college, and if you're an adult, it can be considered sort of childish to mainstream society.
At the same time, the neat thing about metal is that it's so far removed from considerations of pop success that it really doesn't have an age limit like most other rock genres, so there are up and coming bands with members who are in their 30s and 40s, and nobody even thinks about how old they are.
So yeah, know that it's a very niche interest and will alienate you from a lot of adults, but also know that the age restrictions aren't really there. And to be honest, most adults in the US nowadays are so socially isolated and lonely that having a social interest like metal can be a nice, productive part of life.
Post good albums from this decade.

I don’t think any age, if you love music you love music the genres don’t matter.
This is awesome imo

Oh damn good shit, thank you

A new Forteress album to close off the decade would be nice.
Atilla
Live in Leipzig is the third worst Mayhem album
All those live albums that Peaceville reissues for a quick buck are almost all the same. Mediolanum capta est and Marseille 2000 are much more interesting.
Is Finland the best country making bm this decade?
Is the new Pagan Hellfire any good, been meaning to give it a listen.

Attila straight up ruined DMDS with his wanky vocals.
Dead, by a long shot.
