It does seem to be very "product oriented".

I do miss the days when there was more than a handful of producers behind the the majority of the production. Making your own music stand out with specific arrangements can make your songs stand out, but then, there's the "mandatory" pop song length and structure and everything... You can't really escape that if you're not a massively heavy weight in the field.

On that topic, did you have to compromise on songs so they get green lighted by the record company (regarding arrangements, topics, or whatever) ?

You could always demo those and upload them on torrent sites, like Nine Inch Nails did when they saw the Closure and Broken DVDs wouldn't be released officially. The uncompressed DVDs magically popped up on Piratebay one day.
Demoing and developing those ideas on the side might lead somewhere, you never know. Trust me, it's very useful to have an outlet for these unapproved ideas.
