Historically, Republican presidents have actually tried more to push for gun control than Democrats have.

There are rural lefties who are the biggest gun nuts you’ll meet, and urban right wing karens who lead the “assault rifle ban” charges.

The dividing line is rural/urban, not left/right.

Rural folks see guns first as a tool, important to protect themselves and their property. There are no cops a block away, and a rabid coyote is something you may need to deal with. Making sure they, or their neighbour, has a gun makes them feel safer.

Urban folks see guns as a threat first. There’s always somebody to protect them nearby. Having a gun of their own doesn’t make them feel safe, but masking sure the crack heads they see every day don’t have a gun makes them feels safer.

Most urbanites are left, most rural are right, this is why you see the split.
