I’ve known about him since he first starting releasing music. I’ve always viewed him as extremely talented, especially in production, but he can rap though too. In the beginning when he was shrouded in mystery, I didn’t know he was a white kid when no one knew who he was. I also assumed he was starting to blow up when viewed through the lens of Yea Forums buzz and just sheer talent.
That’s where I start to get fuzzy on the details. I heard he struggled with mental health issues and that he had retired Lil Ugly Mane. I don’t hold that against him negatively— in fact I empathize with him. But I’ll listen to a track of his— in this case Uneven Compromise, an 11 min sonic assault that doesn’t sound like anything else in rap— and be absolutely blown away.
I know he found his initial fanbase on Bandcamp and Mister Thug Isolation was released in 2012, but on Spotify none of his top tracks top a million plays and your average pleb isn’t going to know who he is if you ask someone on the street.
So I’ll ask it again, and hopefully Yea Forums will have a productive discussion about it instead of going into default elitist dick mode. Who is Lil Ugly Mane?
So we have a vote for the GOAT, and a vote for who fucking cares go use the internet fucking pleb. Do these cancel each other out?
Connor Russell
nah, he's the fuckin GOAT. no one does what he does in hip hop right now, or ever, and if someone comes close in approach to rap is MAYBE wiki. he is struggling with mental issues, it's clear he has a pretty dark past, some stuff he wrote back in 6th grade or something are borderline disturbing. his "book" about clowns and shit is another reflection of his mental health. that being said, the dude's my favorite artist ever, so I might be A LITTLE biased.
Ian Cruz
Is he still actively making music?
Grayson Brown
hes cool
Nathan Miller
he's playing quite often and I believe he said he has something in the drawer. but honestly, I think he makes music every day and has at least a few records already. the thing with antwon really fucked him though, secret circle's project was so fresh
Jonathan Wood
he’s extremely active on instagram lmao. this ain’t 2012. he ain’t an enigma anymore.
Carson Williams
yeah, im sure he will be back. I hope we can hear some stuff in the next year or 2. Bedwetter was so good, I'm very excited for more
Oliver Myers
I dunno but I'm mad after he cancelled Secret Circle
Gabriel Walker
this as well. some of his latest posts were very interesting, but he seems to slowly show more of himself and his friends, which is a joy to see. I'd dare to say he drops something this year, out of the blue. now that I think about it, I believe he made a post about how pt.II of bedwetter was done, but I think he wasnt ready to release it.
yea, that lp was insane, the ugly feat was pretty dope as well
John Cook
A great producer and an okay rapper. He made the cover art for Blackland Radio so he's good in my book.
Luis Carter
I feel like more people should rightfully be listening to him considering his talent level, but I have trouble gauging his popularity outside of Yea Forums. Which is weird considering this board’s strange relationship with rap.
Angel Parker
A black metal guy who found out the Memphis rap tape scene used to be a thing. I think his actual name is Travis something
Logan Gray
Uh.. would you like to give some context to this comment? Or are you trying do LUM in a nutshell?
Colton James
What context? He used to make shitty lo-fi black metal (as Vudmurk or something similar) then found old Memphis tapes on a blogspot or something. He's probably the best of the revivalists imo
Camden Reyes
Ok that’s what I was clarifying. You started your post with a fragment and without a reply so I was a bit throwed.
I didn’t know about his metal origins. Another piece of the puzzle.
Part of what makes LUM hard to pin down is that he seems to exist in a vacuum (is vacuum an unintentional metaphor for the Internet?). He’s from Richmond, VA, but he’s not really tied to any regional movement, sound or associated acts as far as I can tell. The rap acts that come to mind from that area are Lil Dicky, Pharrell, and Clipse. Yeah, no connection there. And for being such a good producer, he doesn’t seem to be very prolific on that side of the game either. He seems to exist in.. (thug) isolation.
Daniel Collins
nickelus f is from richmond and i know lum cited him as a big influence and is dope. i think they put out tracks together or worked on something together
Landon Scott
hes also got a lot of connects to the hardcore scene, i know hes tight with gatecreeper and played shows with no warning and a few other hardcore bands
Gabriel Scott
uneven compromise is literally the best hip hop track ever created, and man wearing a helmet, stoop lights, haze of interference, and on doing an evil deed blues are not far behind at all
Dominic Garcia
He's great, I love many of his projects
Tyler Gray
I forgot about Secret Circle holy shit
Isaiah Brown
This is really good. Thanks for posting. Can I save this friend?
I love Fantano. This is a must watch here. I can type a bunch of words, but Fantano can say it better. If you have any interest in Lil Ugly Mane whatsoever, watch this. But I really feel like I should say if the universe brought you here and you love music, period, you should watch this.
