I think that free speech is a good ideal, and like other good ideals, only makes sense when exercised within reasonable bounds. The world is not black and white, and any ideology spoils when taken at its most extreme and literal extent. Things are complex, and simple solutions are usually incomplete and nonfunctional ones. When people use "free speech" to defend being retards online, they usually don't actually know what they're talking about, because free speech isn't intended to defend any and all behavior that can be classified as "speech", but rather to prevent unfair suppression of legitimate ideals and beliefs.

As always, there's a requirement of good faith. Speech made in good faith should be protected. Speech made to be misleading, harmful, or obnoxious doesn't deserve protection.

And as far as children go, as always, it should be up to parental discretion for the most part, also bounded by the child's well-being (absolute parental discretion can be harmful when it comes to a lot of parents).
