You can't use your perspective on the whole genre since all your mates would have been underageb& when that came out. Grime had been dead for over 10 years by that point. Drill is trying to replace it but it's fucking shit so I am glad they are sorting out the problem by stabbing each other faster than ever before.

The other thing, Grime when is was coming out was more or less fot kids, I only still like it because I listened to it when I was younger. It's probably why I don't like drill, it isn't really aimed at me.

Dizzee Rascal won the Mercury Prize in 2003 and the genre was commercially most popular in the few years after that until 2007 when everyone tried to become rappers and failed big time. Around about 2005 Grime was constantly on the radio and Kano, Tinchy Stryder and Wiley started to become mainstream famous around then despte being around for ages, same with BBK and some others. It took a bit longer for people like Ghetts, Chipmunk, Devlin and Big Narstie but they are nearly there/there now.

I don't know why this one freestyle from Stormzy seemed to grab everyone's attention when it wasn't anything better than what people had heard a million times before.

It's just not good. The tone and flow is terrible. You can feel the anger and threats from Americans. There's guns here. It just culturally fits America better so I don't like grime due to that.
