OP here, I've heard both of these but I appreciate the recommendations!
First user, you gotta try some more soul, listen to some Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, maybe even D'Angelo or just some less well-known jazz, later day Miles, especially 70's, some late 60's Coltrane, more Mingus, Coleman, etc.
Second user, listen to more Residents and Zappa, some Mahavishnu, maybe even some Coil and Daughters.
