The movies were pretty fair adaptions of the books, certainly compared to what we've seen in Amazon trailer. Who is this black woman supposed to be, anyway? Take a look at any of the original trilogy promo posters and tell me how many totally made-up characters you see? How many gender/race swapped characters do you see? How many characters are portrayed totally different than they appeared in the books, as opposed to Galadriel in the Amazon trailer? The Peter Jackson trilogy was trying to tell Tolkien's story, it wasn't Mary Sue fanfic.

The movies were 10 million times closer to Tolkien's work than anything I saw in the Amazon trailer.

Adaptations to screen require this for the sake of the fact it's a huge project with lots of characters, and it's only fair to include black people with the right skills, although there's nothing wrong with being a purist either. The issue is whether or not you can justify your move artistically and if the final product is a good job overall - it has to be failthful.

Tolkien's worlds are really indepth and there are a lot of people who are keen on every detail, so if a certain type of people and race come from an area then they should look the part - making an elf black is not helping anything its obvious pandering for pandering sakes and the fact that there are people that think it's a complete racism issue means that our standards have stooped so low as to criticism we afford to people that are supposed to be equal to other races, not better.

thats just whataboutism tho, the two analogies are not the same. The example you gave, a Chinese monkey king, is relative to a very real location (china), and a very real culture (chinese). We know that tolkein based middle earth largely around european; mainly saxon and norse, culture. But they are not inherently set in a location that's immediately associable with any real life location or specific culture (other than broadly european)
