What else is similar?

I've listened to all of the standard recommendations for stuff that sounds like Dino Jr., but nothing really struck the same chords. What are some more obscure bands that do the sound well?

You're living all over me is their only above average album.

ikr?
the rest of their discography is so bland

Tad kinda sounds like them to me

or maybe Swervedriver

There's quite a few bands that are similar but Early J is such a weird guitarist, and Early Lou is such a weird bassist, there's very few bands that can strike the same chords. literally.

but if you haven't listened to Bug check it out. They Always Come is one of the most underrated songs in their whole discography.

Thanks man

i can understand not liking the s/t because it is pretty weird. but how do you people get into you're living all over me but not bug? im genuinely curious. bug isnt quite as strong but the sound is very similar

Ovlov is a little closer to new Dino but they're still pretty good.

Man I don't know how they go so under the radar I really enjoy both of their albums.

Early Built To Spill and Treepeople were both pretty influenced by early Dinosaur Jr. Honestly next to J, Doug is probably my favorite indie rock guitarist.

Perfect From Now On is definitely their best album, but they shed a lot of the Dino similarities.

I know right? super solid.

For a more modern take, Yuck wished so hard that they could be Dinosaur Jr that it kinda hurt.

i like their music but i'll never respect them for apologizing for being featured in World Peace.

ovlov is basically just the verse section of little fury things extended to the length of a full album

Thanks a bunch bros

pretty much this, kinda in the best way possible. Their music sounds like a really satisfying yawn.

ironically them apologizing for being in world peace got me into mde.

lol

Bug is definitely above average.

Also if you haven't heard Hum, definitely check them out, a little more space rockey, and not so much country folky chord influences, but Downward Is Heavenward is as close to a masterpiece as you can get.

The second half of They Always Come blows me away every time. Don't think I would have kept listening to them to this day if it hadn't been for that.

you mean the screaming part? i need to check them out

No that's the intro. The verse comes after that part.

Bro I don't care if this is Greta Van Fleeting my favourite 80s and 90s alt bands this is solid shit.

That and the outro to No Bones, when J's guitar turns into a crying demon dolphin riding a wave of emotion and overdubbed acoustic guitars gives me shivers to this day.

How can J express so much intense emotion with his guitar, but when you talk to him he sounds like two napkins rubbing together?

A little Cowpunkier, but definitely check out Dead Moon.

I also love swirlies.

tony molina and his old ban ovens

sad boy lyrics and crazy solos

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Their fist album is even better than this one, when they were just Dinosaur. Also J. was in the hardcore band Deep Wound before Dinosaur which was also pretty good.

Fu Manchu - The Action is Go.

I made this chart a while back and never used it anywhere.

It's not completely related but there are some of the bands are similar to what you're looking for.

Obviously, Sonic Youth if you're not already listening to their 80s material, get on it.

What are the "standard recommendations" for stuff that sounds like Dinosaur Jr? For the me the obvious choice would be the Wipers but there's no way you listened to them because they're a much better band.

The standard picks are Pavement, Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Sebadoh, and Archers of Loaf. And I'm actually a huge wipers fan.

How far have you dived into each of those bands material? I'm guessing only a few songs on their most popular albums.

Yep in fact I have only heard Gold Soundz, Teenage Riot, Today, Flame, and Web in Front respectively. In fact I listen to them so little, I made sure to specify that people don't recommend them to me because I am so familiar with their music.

Marijuana

Considering J is straightedge, more like autism

Beyond is an underrated album and really deserves more love.

They all sound the same, nerd.
