Under the Sign of the black mark is the most atmospheric, brooding, symphonic metal album ever. Its literally the audibal version of a horror masterpiece. I'll never forget getting that album at 16 at HMV in Vancouver and thinking I was committing some kind of mortal sin.

Yeah but he was one of the first to do that kind of stuff. It has such a gritty aesthetic not out of intention (like the bands that copied Bathory), but out of necessity because it was recorded in a fucking garage and he did weird shit like throw water barrels down stairs to get the intro on the Return. Its crude but it works.

I would compare it to something like Henry: portrait of a serial killer to a modern polished horror film.
