Not entirely the same but it was 2014 and her S/T had just came out. I was new to indie and rock music(family was into hip-hop)and was looking for something catchy and actually listenable(Something Fantano and Yea Forums doesn't always care about). Saw his review for her S/T and noticed Actor on his green screen square. Was drawn into it a bit by her face as a fucking pubescent 15 year old. Listened to "Digital Witness", then "Cruel" and then "Actor" and have been a fan ever since even if (Masseduction kind of sucked).

nah I was more into Joanna Newsom and Janelle Monae although Janelle wasn't very popular

I was obsessed with the Archandroid back then :) haven't even listened to her new albums but I know they won't compare

Her last patrician album before she became a pretentious sellout.

The Archandroid and Shiina Ringo's Karuki Zamen etc were the two albums that truly blew my mind back then. I was also obsessed with it. And yeah Archandroid is still her best album but her following albums are pretty good too.

Anyone else kind of worried she boxed her self in stylistically after the last two albums? I know Actor and Strange Mercy are products of their time, and Annie can't entirely go back to that heavily orchestrated sound. But I really do want those sounds back. We're now in this imo shitty era of pop-timism that she kind of falls into now.

The way the melody goes at the end there is the most charming thing. It's like a mix of gazing into the mysterious night, feels slightly blue, but then annie comes and gives you a hug

While she IS that, I definitely disagree. She has a unique melodic sensibility, sometimes weird or even funny, but always catchy and often beautiful. One of my first impressions was how often I was actually heartily laughing at the music, but somehow it was still cool.

I agree. Her beong pretty helps. You can see in youtube comments fawn over her, but Ariana Grande and Beyonce are pretty too and have some hood songs they don't get the same respect from me. She definitely has a unique formula in her songwriter that runs throughout her discography(breakbeats and funky rhythms, farty guitar tones, ambigous instruments, and wry lyrics). She's always trying to suprise the listener with a weird solo, clever lyric, or ballsy hook.

The S/T had some good stuff but she sold out hard with most of SM and Masseduction.

gave this album many chances but i couldn't deal with the overall spazziness, it just wasn't pleasant listening. the one that came after was good. it's fucking weird that she's mainstream (or at least mainstream-adjacent) now

Her first album is a cutesy little indie rock record, but I think she topped it in every way with Actor. Her first record can sound very naive and too quirky for it's own good. There are some hidden gems like "Paris is Burning", "Your Lips Are Red", and "Human Racing" though.

I think the theme of masseduction kind of fits well with the vague electronica oblivion. It might clear up with the next theme, whatever it is gonna be
