be white and racist

Hank Williams in general

Nice

make the transition from bob dylan/neil young into the real stuff

townes van zandt is pretty palatable

Country is fucking DEAD. The best country band I've heard in years is First Aid Kit and they're Swedes.

I would start with the bluegrass / early country. Carter Family, Doc Watson, Charlie Poole. Most of even the "classic country" is too poppy for me and mostly sounds like the pop of its day just like modern country does.

For country that isn't bluegrass but it's less poppy, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings... Commander Cody

Listen to Alabama and understand real life

I like these guys a lot: youtube.com/watch?v=zwsJIB6aBhI

God damn this is cheesy. I get that Americans are more earnest than the rest of the world but even then this is too much.

Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger
Bobby Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe
Blaze Foley - Clay Pigeons

you got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em

Country takes an ultra simple, highly accessible route to get its fans. It extremely effective though.

Why does country sound like pop garbage these days

Same reason Rock does.

Because of a lack of moral fiber

rural americans only care about getting fucked up and talking about how rural they are

first thing you've gotta know is when to hold 'em

It is (or was) a pretty broad genre, so there are many good entries.

Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Gram Parsons could be pretty accessible if you like folk or more bluesy acoustic rock.

Check out the album Wayfaring Strangers: Cosmic American Music for some more psychedelic country.

Willie is easy to get into at most any stage, but maybe try Redheaded Stranger or his album with Waylon Jennings.

All three Hank Williams are varying levels of good to great and varying levels of accessible.

As for contemporaries, though there are few good ones, you could check out Colter Wall, Sturgill Simpson (slowly becoming less country and more his own thing), Jamey Johnson, and maybe Chris Stapleton.

It's a fantastic genre once you get into it. You just learn to ignore the absolute trash that makes up most of the modern artists

It's more of a singles genre then an album genre, at least the early golden days before it turned to shit.

>Blaze Foley
based

If we're talkin Blaze, OP should also check out "My Reasons Why" and "Rainbows and Ridges"

The simplicity of his recordings and warmth in his voice just make me want to cry

>rural americans
you mean yuppies with coal rollers

same thing

no. they're roleplaying as rural americans

it's not but his early hillbilly shit is worth a listen

yes, he started out as country. His original nickname was the hillbilly cat

Do this OP. This guy gets it

First line is great

American Music Club 'California' belongs on this way more than DCH

a mixture of country and gospel, yes
do a little bit of research

why is turn turn turn on here instead of sweetheart of the rodeo

These guys suck, don’t listen to them OP. Hippie country. Listen to Hank Williams, Carter Family etc. also get into what’s called old-time music, which is basically pre-country&western. Dillard Chandler, Ernest Stoneman, Art Stamper are all good and many others like them. Lots of fiddle tunes, gospel and whatnot. But don’t listen to Alabama. Seriously.
