Mike totally did it, dude. Don't even think for a second that it was Brian. Imagine being Brian, and being screamed at by Mike Love, the most disturbing-looking man in the world. Imagine what he looks like when he's seething with anger. Watch the documentary included with Brian's 2004 Smile, Beautiful Dreamer. The interviewer asks why they never finished and released Smile. Brian's first reason: "Mike didn't like it." In 2011, Brian said Mike was "disgusted" with Smile because it didn't sound like the Beach Boys.

Brian was working on an album called Adult/Child in the 70s. The cornerstone of his masterpiece, Smile, denotes the innocence of childhood as the purest state of man. He did not want to be an adult. He found adults to be so trifling and bemusing and he wanted nothing to do with that kind of person. Do you know anything about who Murry Wilson was?

i sympathize with mike love. he co-wrote most of their top 10 singles. three of those singles made it to #1, including good vibrations. then brian ditches mike for this pretentious geek van dyke and his pseudo intellectual lyrics. from mike's perspective, i'm sure he resented brian for not continuing to collaborate with him, especially after they just had their most commercially successful single. i'd be like "who the fuck is this van dyke guy, and what has he accomplished that we haven't?" i can definitely see why mike thought brian was fucking up.

i can respect where you're coming from. even if there hadn't been protests from mike, i don't think smile would have been finished. the way brian was recording everything in sections, it would have been a massive undertaking to edit all of that together in 1966/67. based on everything i've read (and i've read and obsessed about everything pertaining to smile), i'm not convinced that brian did smiley smile purely because mike didn't like smile. brian was faced with the task of basically putting together 12 good vibrations. he was undoubtedly hit with how much tedious work was involved, so it was abandoned in part due to that.

After the non-release of Smile, the Beach Boys released 8 great albums from 1967-73. They didn't become an "oldies act" because of Mike Love. It was the release of a compilation called Endless Summer in 1974 that did, resulting in "15 Big Ones" in 1976 (though they continued to release good material, here and there after wards). Mike didn't derail Smile either, contrary to popular belief. As for your last comment, I prefer pretty much any Beach Boys album to any Beatles album, but I'm much more of a Beach Boys fan.

When did Mike scream at Brian? Mike is a pretty calm guy and has practiced transcendental mediation and vegetarianism consistently since 1968. If you haven't noticed, Brian (and the rest of the members) have said different and often contradictory things over the years, not just in regards to Smile either. Brian especially changes his tune all the time.

Brian wrote every part of it though and the boys would just come in and sing. They used that system for most of the 60s. Brian was the creative leader and they trusted him. As Dennis put it "Brian Wilson IS the Beach Boys and we're [the rest of the Beach Boys] his messengers", or something like that (going by memory).

Mike didn't end it. You can argue that he caused Van Dyke Parks to leave the project when he asked him what "over and over the crow cries uncover the cornfield" lyric meant, but the project continued for quite some time after VDP left. Despite Mike asking VDP about the lyric, he still sang/recorded the part

Friends wasn't made in India. Only Mike Love went and he wrote no songs there that ended up on Friends. The Beach Boys recorded it in Brian's home studio just like the previous two albums before it
