Both genres that existed long before this album
the velvet underground invented both of the those genres in 1967
based
Direct me to the VU song that invented Shoegaze if you wouldn't mind. I'm waiting
based
Shoegaze didn't really exist. The closest thing was JAMC and they were more just noisy post-punk.
(not true, by the way)
Brian Eno invented shoegaze in 1974
lol this is absolutely not true.
spacemen 3 were playing shows before the mary chain and were renowned for the literal "shoe gazing" they did (lots of pedals not many notes).
sunny sundae smile came out months before you're living all over me
a.r kane was releasing singles and eps before this time too
i wouldnt say created but people like eno and tvu are certainly influences too
sunny sundae smile is noise pop
If JMC we're just noisy post-punk how is You're Living All Over Me not just noisy indie rock?
you want to defend you're living all over me as shoegaze but exclude sss?
that literally is what it is lol
Velvet underground are just boring heroin addicts that thought they were better than everyone else because they were heroin addicts
Where do I find more music like Poledo? It's not the best song on the album but I think it's really interesting and would love to find more like it
not shoegaze the vocals are too high in the mix
this is my favorite album, but i wouldn't say it created either of those genres, though it definitely contributed heavily. perfect album.
but that album is actually good and shoegaze is a shitty genre
that's not even the most shoegaze-like song on the album

>ahem
There is a definite argument to be made that it's the first true indie rock album but whether or not it "created" indie rock, I'm not so sure.
The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worthy of being saved.
In a sense, the Beatles are emblematic of the status of rock criticism as a whole: too much attention paid to commercial phenomena (be it grunge or U2) and too little to the merits of real musicians. If somebody composes the most divine music but no major label picks him up and sells him around the world, a lot of rock critics will ignore him. If a major label picks up a musician who is as stereotyped as can be but launches her or him worldwide, your average critic will waste rivers of ink on her or him. This is the sad status of rock criticism: rock critics are basically publicists working for major labels, distributors and record stores. They simply highlight what product the music business wants to make money from.
Why do people not acknowledge Cocteau Twins' Garlands as at least a proto-shoegaze thing? I get that they are in general and the album's more goth rock overall but no one ever seems to look at a track like Blind Dumb Deaf and make that connection.
you cant have a proto-gaze thread without mx80

Sunday Morning.
indie rock isnt a genre. there were independent labels releasing rock music long before DJR
they didnt create shoegaze but they definitely had a noticeable influence on MBV and a bunch of other bands like that. but then again so did sonic youth, big black and a bunch of other american bands. you cant attribute this entirely to DJR
Phil Specter invented Shoegaze and Joy Division perfected it
>JAMC and they were more just noisy post-punk
JAMC had nothing to do with postpunk. Postpunk bands almost exclusively have a political or intellectual edge and are very anti-pop. JAMC were a bunch of stoners who decided they wanted to invade the pop charts with their own music. but when they played their first show their amp was broken and no one could hear anything except feedback. the band didnt care because they were fucked up, kept playing, caused a riot, and made headlines. they realized they could use this publicity to their advantage and so when they recorded their first single they made the screeching feedback a part of their sound
tl;dr JAMC wanted to be the next duran duran but ended up creating an entirely new sound because they were fucked up
fuckin love this album
There is no more music like Poledo
check out all the early shit by sebadoh/sentridoh
Dinosaur Jr. is in my top 5 but no...not at all. If anything they created butt rock (bands like Butthole Surfers, Puddle of Mudd, Melvins, etc.) but even then I'd say Husker Du were the real OGs.
both influenced, definitely didn't invent tho
