I'm having big trouble getting into pic related and various other jazz essentials. I guess I like the instrumentation but I just don't really feel anything when listening to it. I don't have the slightest idea what pic related is about. A LOVE SUPREME WHAT??? FUCK YOU.
I feel like there's some type of hidden depth in most jazz records that I just don't get and it makes me fucking mad. Basically, I want to know what makes jazz album xyz so great beyond its technicality. I also don't want to read through all of these pretentious rym reviews cuz it's a pain in the ass so please don't link me to any of that crap
How do I explore the themes of non-lyrical albums?

most jazz albums don't have some deep meaning, they're just music. also it's fine to dislike albums
>how do I explore the themes of non-lyrical albums
read up on it. interpret
I don't particularly dislike als I just feel like I'm missing something that would make me appreciate it much more. I love other instrumental-based genres like ambient or idm and I have no trouble appreciating them even without exploring the context of each record. Jazz on the other hand...
Some instrumental compositions are tone poems, they try to represent a landscape, a scene, a situation, an object. Stan Kenton - City of Glass, for example, tries to represent a futuristic city.
Others try to draw/express a certain abstract feeling or thing. Using a non-jazz example, The Beatles - Revolution 9 tries to literally express musically what a Revolution is.
maybe because you didn't like the music as much?
that's because Jazz is different
Low effort answer: Surrender yourself to the music, the same way you would at a rock concert. You don't have to intellectualize it
High effort answer: Read up on it if you care. Start with and learn theory and learn an instrument.
Having a trained ear helps a lot to appreciate Jazz, but anyone has the ability to appreciate a lot about it if they surrender to the music and listen to it the way that they want to
Your musical intelligence is just low. Nothing you can do about it.
Are you seriously unable to form even an educated guess of ALS’s theme? How about you read the names of the parts and apply a modicum or critical thinking?
Well like I said I'm digging the sound but I usually turn it off after a few minutes because I just don't get any emotional connection with that record. When I listen to an album I want to feel something. In my case, even the most complex jazz music would serve just as background music, which I feel is unfair given the amount of technicality and allegedly genius compositions they usually possess
This guy is right too. When you listen to a Jazz album, try to find the liner notes online and read those. They were meant to be consumed together.
maybe try growing into jazz
I guess I do have a trained ear since I listen to lots of music from various genres, even some that are much harder to get into for other people than jazz (e. g. noise). I've also listened to jazz in various settings ( in bed, outside, at midnight...). Nothing works
ok this whole thread is just bait.
move out boys
You're overthinking it, if it makes you feel something then great, but if you don't feel anything then maybe it's not for you. If you have to read up on it to like it, it probably isn't for you
What helps is to already know how to play a instrument
well fuck me then
Listen to some Bill Evans. It's very feelsy without skimping on technique
>Basically, I want to know what makes jazz album xyz so great beyond its technicality. I also don't want to read through all of these pretentious rym reviews cuz it's a pain in the ass so please don't link me to any of that crap
So basically you want to understand how something works but you’re not willing to invest even the slightest effort to reading about it for yourself?
perhaps what you are imposing upon the music (what you are looking to feel) is vastly immature? and don't be a Nazi about the world - stop telling it what to do and what to do for you. you need a good dose of minimalism and likely a good dose of Cage until you come out the other end not expecting say every book to be le ebin halfling quest for the ring. change your consciousness.
also, jazz is somewhat difficult, because its both free and advanced. start with some classics, but classics with top notch quality:
jazz is almost like a sport in its focus on physical virtuosity and technique, whereas ambient music i think is based almost completely on emotion with comparably little physicality to it. as others have said, actually playing an instrument and especially playing jazz specifically i think makes you appreciate it more because you can relate to it, similar to how people that play a sport are able to understand and enjoy it on a deeper level
Jazz is meaningless wankery. Listen to classical if you want depth.
jazz Is probably the most free form of art there is, which can be both free and represent the complexity of human emotion and drama
