Siouxsie & The Banshees

Converge? Converge isnt punk. Probably the best metalcore band of all time though.

>Converge isn't punk
To me, Converge is very clearly a direct descendent of hardcore bands (that have been retroactively branded by journalists as "grindcore") such as Napalm Death, SS Decontrol, All White Jury, The Siege, The FU's, Cancerous Growth, Brain Injured Unit, Anal Cunt, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, and Terrorizer. Converge even have the same Northeast origins of many of these bands and were without a shadow of a doubt heavily inspired by them. The sound they have takes the hardcore roots and incorporates more progressive song structures, which, combined with the distorted riffs and shouted vocals, evokes metal, hence the name "metalcore," a tag which works as a reference to the sound but can be misleading if you are trying to determine how the band arrived at the sound. In fact I'd even argue the technical aspects of Coverge's sound are inspired by mathcore like DLJ. The Mathcore/metalcore sound of Converge in fact has very little common sound-wise with almost any genre of metal, least of all the originators of the genre. The only comparisons you could maybe accurately draw between Converge and metal would be to crossover thrash (a genre with plenty of overlap into hardcore), and possibly technical death metal, a style which relies on similar technicality and speed yet arrived at that sound through a completely different lineage and features many enormous differences. You brought up sludge metal which I can perhaps see glimpses of but again Sludge Metal is arguably more punk than metal (despite its name) due to it originating mostly from Black Flag's My War and the early Melvins material. Given that Black Flag is pretty clearly a punk band and Melvins straddle the line but come down pretty clearly on the punk side in aesthetic and ethos, I'd say that sludge metal is just as much punk as it is metal. Looking at their influences and lineage then I can pretty definitively say Converge are a hardcore band through and through to my ears.

Dead Kennedys, tho...

well either way, a better discography than Dead Kennedys, Descendents, Misfits, etc? I doubt it but I'd check out a head to head.

Those bands each have like, two or three max excellent records. Converge have about 7 at this point, give or take a few depending on your preferences. it's no contest

>Converge have about 7 at this point

>Petitioning the empty sky
>When forever comes crashing
>Jane doe
>You fail me
>No heroes
>Axe to fall
>All we love we leave behind
>The dusk in us

Like I said, you can give or take an extra one or two for personal taste. But the fact is, no other punk bands catalogue can compare with these guys

youtube.com/watch?v=HczPJVnu_UU

well if we're stretching the definition as much as converge I'll say Nomeansno who are much closer to punk anyways but I've always insited they are noise rock

>Nomeansno
too good at their instruments to be punk but excellent band

see , if you say converge aren't punk then you truly know very little about punk history.

Nomeansno are punk as fuck and fantastic too but I haven't listened to enough of their catalogue to make a call on it. Good suggestion tho

way more punk than Converge. Literally fact.

That’s not Towers of London

I insist that Converge have little to nothing to do with punk but thats all beside the point. Fact is you have stretched the definition extremely thin with Converge so there is consequently a ton of potential competition. Nomeansno being the first contender.

They worship the Ramones too much to not be punk lol

>Converge have little to nothing to do with punk but thats all beside the point.
Explain this. I've laid out a pretty definitive argument linking Converge to many punk bands not only by sound but by geography. They are wholly and completely aesthetically and soundwise a punk band. Refute me.

Converge is metal not punk because their riffs are good

I think its beside the point so I think we're ok to agree to disagree

NOMEANSNO > CONVERGE

static age has more lasting power than all of those combined lmao, not to mention all of the other classics in the punk genre - PUNK not metalcore

Metalcore quite literally means Metal with Hardcore punk. I haven't heard a lick of converge though.

Only good punk bands are Black Flag, Sex Pistols, The Clash and shit like powerviolence that may as well be metal, punk rock is for dorks that wanna larp as cool edgy rebels

that's what the word means, in practice it's some other kind of bullshit, besides a few beacons like converge

Look man, you won't catch me saying static age isn't fantastic. I own it on vinyl. But I don't think one album can compete with an entire catalogue of fantastic albums. Jane doe alone gives it stiff competition in my books as while static age does have a ton of charm and catchiness, there are a few songs on there I'm not nuts about like "We are 138," whereas for me Jane doe is probably as close to flawless the whole way through as an album can get for me, and All we love we leave behind is not far behind in terms of quality in my books.

See my other post here explaining why converge are punk.

It seems like the "Converge contest" is going to require the other band to objectively prolific i.e. have a lot of albums. Otherwise Misfits for example would be up for just best album not best discography.

We Are 138 guitar solo blows away anything by Convirgins

>We Are 138 guitar solo
It's literally like, 3 seconds long if I'm being generous. Pretty unimpressive dude. You seriously gonna say that three seconds of diddling around beats this? youtube.com/watch?v=gIB9Cai5kZ4

black flag along with the misfits shit on converge, hell even GG Allin shits on sex pistols. 84-86 GG is the exact same thing but raunchier and catchier

Your tourism is showing

Anyway, the real answer is the Wipers.

QUALITY NOT QUANTITY

CONVIRGINS

If Converge and Nomeanso are in the conversation, then Bathory's self titled shits on everything ITT.

>metalcore = punk
gotta be 18+ and up, friendo

>Bathory
"Quorthon said that the band's early work was influenced primarily by Black Sabbath, Motörhead and GBH." Bathory are metal. See to understand why converge are punk

see

Converge most important band in modern metal and hardcore.

Aborted fucking covered them.

Checkm8 metal fags

i agree with you OP

Converge and nomeansno are actually punk bands, though.

Converge is a hardcore band.

Hardcore is punk.

You mad Yea Forums

You can keep quoting the same post to make your arguments for you, it still doesn't make converge any less metal than it is. There wouldn't even be an extreme metal scene if not for punk. You're reaching so damn hard it is ridiculous.

I PATTED JAKE'S ASS

I keep quoting it because literally no one has refuted it beyond "hurr no guis it's metal they have screams and shit lol." How about you actually compose an argument if you want me to stop quoting it, you retard. They even had a fucking split with agoraphobic nosebleed.

>There wouldn't even be an extreme metal scene if not for punk.
Hugely debatable, metal was ALWAYS about trying to out-heavy one another, since Black Sabbath who more or less invented metal by literally having the sole goal of one-upping Zeppelin in terms of heaviness. Extreme metal is more or less the logical conclusion of the direction metal had been moving in and yes, it happened paralled too punk and some would say in competition with punk, and yes there was some crossover, it's pretty easy to delineate punk and metal. Furthermore punk having influence on extreme metal does not mean Converge in any way is an extreme metal band, kek. They literally have fucking hardcore breakdowns all over their songs. Homewrecker is literally one of the most archetypical hardcore songs Ive ever heard. You're delusional if you think Converge is extreme metal

>goes back to 1970 by conjuring Black Sabbath’s name to make an argument

Stopped reading right there. Like I said, you’re reaching so goddamn hard it almost hurts at this point. It goes back to the old trope of metal heads trying to be punk and vice versa. Quit while you are ahead.

and its about scales etc.

>Homewrecker is literally one of the most archetypical hardcore songs Ive ever heard.
what in the literal fuck

After I asked you to make an argument you literally failed to make a single one other than "it's about scales etc." You're either retarded or trolling at this point, I'm not sure but either way just fucking off yourself to stop wasting oxygen because I can hear you mouth breathing from all the way over here. I brought up black sabbath because their effort to out-heavy zep was the birth of metal, and using that to illustrate the point that metal was always about being faster and heavier than the other bands in the scene, so metal would have reached extreme metal with or without punk, because extreme metal is the logical conclusion of metal. Once again, you have failed to make a single argument as to why converge is metal and not punk aside from "it's about scales etc." Which is quite frankly laughable and embarrassing.

The point of posting anonymously is so that you focus on what is being said in the post not who is saying it.

Scales etc. are probably the most important factor to distinguish hardcore punk from metalcore. Vocals are probably the least important.

>Scales etc. are probably the most important factor to distinguish hardcore punk from metalcore.

Completely incorrect. Metalcore is similar to Crossover thrash, except with more dissonance and a focus on breakdowns.

Can you refer to which scales you are actually talking about and which ones that converge use and where, and why they are metalcore and not punk scales?

Hardcore punk cannot stray very far from the pentatonic without turning into metalcore. Hardcore punk is an endangered genre that is being swallowed up by metal. Incorporating hardcore punk into metal will not expand it but destroy it.

So fucking Agent Orange are metalcore then?? This is about the dumbest thing I've ever seen on this board

My favorite. Another band that really stands on the line between metal and punk, but unlike Converge no one really fights about which camp they belong to.

youtube.com/watch?v=OmPr2QfHVOk

Attached: Big pic.jpg (850x595, 218K)

well lets take this song for example
youtube.com/watch?v=56kY74aJT1E
it has far more to do with metal than punk and its influence on metal is likely extremely underrated especially that guitar solo. This song has basically nothing if in fact nothing whatsoever to do with punk. Outside of what clubs etc they played.

Great instrumentals, but i cant stand the voice for an entire album.I will stay with Dead Kennedys or Fugazi

this song is literally NWOBHM style METAL
youtube.com/watch?v=aZAxW4fpBAQ
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_wave_of_British_heavy_metal
not one single solitary note of this song is not NWOBHM

Bump

F u g a z i

Metalcore sounds nothing like that

It's just metal but everything metal amplified henche metalcore

>Fugazi has left the chat

based

op where do I start with this band?

I dont know who's more of a pathetic faggot, the tatted up twink frontman of this band or OP who writes paragraphs upon paragraphs defending his favorite band, thinking he has an objective opinion

Fugazi or The Clash.

Start with Jane Doe, it might take a few listens to get into but it’s worth it

Dude, they were literally SoCal contemporaries of descendants and black flag. Get your head out of your ass literally no one in any world would say Agent Orange are fucking NWOBHM.

My nigga.

ew don't use that word

You're a moron

thats not Amebix

The Misfits, by far.
FUGAZI is up there.
I've always liked Dillinger Four and Kid Dynamite, but I doubt anyone (myself included) would consider either of them one of the "all-time greats".

>+
>And up
God this board fucking SUCKS.

What's up muh nigger?

nigger is fine

The Cure
