pretty good

tourist-core but good

I admit to being a tourist, this is the first folk album Ive heard that got my interest. What else would you recommend that has that same primal and raw energy?

the rest of his discography

idk you'll probably like The Incredible String Band but if you're new you should just go look for prog folk guides. also check out the rest of his discography like the other user said

I guess Richard just sounds like Richard eh?

Ill start working through his stuff now, thanks bud

Thanks will do

comus

based
some dude puts his heart and soul into his art and then some dipshit on the internet goes "hm hm, tourist-core but it's okay i guess"

stop being such a sensitive bitch. one of the reasons i said that was because a lot of people who enjoy this album dont even give the rest of his discography the time of day

this album terrified my friend who only listens to music by black people and he forced me to turn it off because it freaked him out so bad.

Something about his singing really throws normies off. I think theyre just so used to hearing vibrato they somehow think Richard is off-key as he sings, despite being generally spot on.

OP here, just finished The Magic Bridge, pretty great though a much much more intimate record than peasant. Very nice.

Nothing Important is his magnum opus, though its a pretty difficult record to get into. He has stuff more difficult still but I don’t personally enjoy it.

Fuck I just started it, holy shit what a massive sound. This is exactly what I was looking for tonight. Thanks for pushing me to listen to the rest of his work, I dont know why Ive just been ignoring it and listening to Peasant over and over while waiting for a new album.

His voice is really unique

Glad to hear it man. Dawson is one of my biggest inspirations and I love that Peasant finally pushed him into the pseudo-mainstream. You’ll be chewing on this record for a while if you give it the proper patience. It’s really something special, like nothing I’ve ever heard except maybe Ys and pic related.

I love that album, have you ever listened to Robbie Basho? I'm sure you have but I can't help but hear the inspiration when listening to the album you posted.

Yeah Im definitely going to give it a few listens. Already had to listen to Judas Iscariot twice to digest what I was hearing, havent even got into going through the lyrics for the second track.

Who is Ys btw?

Not him but Ys is an album by artist Joanna Newsom

Cool thanks man

fucking wild vibrato, really nice stuff, thanks for the recc bud.

Damn boy Ys is gonna blow your fucking mind. Neither of those recs are as incredibly dissonant as Dawson but they’re all among my absolute favorite records. I guess all I can say is don’t listen to Joanna until you feel like you’ve properly absorbed the Dawson cuz she might be even more dense than he is

Another record you’d potentially enjoy is this one here. It’s sometimes hard to stomach but the last two tracks are two of my favorite songs ever recorded. Unfortunately it can be tough to find but if you dig through the archives I think you’ll find it eventually. The Vim & Vigour of Alvarius B. and Cerberus Shoal is the name

Oh and yeah basho is literally god

Really appreciate all the recommendations. Before Dawson, I never knew folk could be this intense and raw, I always wrote it off as some very flowery ren-faire poetry kind of stuff.

Its been very very long since Ive been so excited to hear new music.

Joanna might at first strike you as specifically the thing you dislike. I (and most of Yea Forums desu) would urge you to push past that initial feeling and think about her like you’re thinking about Dawson, even though she doesn’t embrace dissonance as much (except in her vocal.) She is genuinely one of the most rewarding artists of all time to “get,” but it might take some time.

The other records are right up your alley, although Broughton is extremely minimalist. Enjoy!

Definitely listen to newsom in general. Have one on me is her best in my opinion and one of my favorites ever.

see him live if you get the chance, he goes so fucking hard. It’s a wonder his voice hasn’t been destroyed like Newsom’s was

Yeah Ive seen some of the live shows, he seriously gives it his all. Im in Canada so I hope Ill get the chance see he so rarely tours out of the UK it seems.

>What else would you recommend that has that same primal and raw energy?
A freak-folk-ish dude I've been enjoying lately is Alasdair Roberts, similar sound, more singer-songwriter than more famous freak folk acts like Incredible String Band and Comus. You would enjoy Gryphon, though it's heavier on the horns. For raw power you've got Trembling Bells (Carbeth and Constant Pageant are good). I'll see if I can think of anything else.
