based Scaruffi added ratings out of 10 for jazz albums like he had done for rock albums previously
don't forget to listen to all the new 9s and 8s if you want to be a patrician :)

that is awesome. Thanks user. Remember though, jazz/classical scores are not = to rock scores. He considers an 8 for jazz, better than 8 for rock.
fucking finally
It actually adds more confusion, he only gave My Favourite Things an 7, but it is listed as the 22nd best jazz album ever.
>(The lists for each decade are much more accurate --->)
now we know just how much more.
>He considers an 8 for jazz, better than 8 for rock.
got a source for this?
No 9.5s
damn that's a top of new 8s
I will search now. He said he is confused that people combine his rock, classical and jazz lists somewhere
The album is kind of overrated though. Trane's live performances of My Favorite Things are just so much better.
pretty sure Scaruffi hates cover albums in general so I'm surprised it's even that high
Covers in jazz are seen very differently than covers in rock. In fact, nobody even calls them covers.
>Personally, I get rather bored listening to the 100th version of a "standard". Therefore I tend to reward original compositions over covers. A well-played album of covers is... a well-played album of covers. An album of great compositions is... a masterpiece by that composer. (Incidentally, most jazz "standards" are not much better than pop songs, and often they actually "are" pop songs, something that, personally, I don't find very interesting).
>"I don't find pop songs very interesting"
>rates Loveless 9/10
What did he mean by this??
If Loveless was acoustic or generic soft rock he would rate it 5/10 or less
Ah ok, gotcha.
I actually really like hearing standards though, because it really highlights the players creativity in improvisation, since you can compare rather directly to other versions of the standard.
Also keep in mind that My Favorite Things was NOT a standard at the time Trane recorded that album. Trane effectively owned that tune for a good many years.
It's a really cool defining feature of jazz just how much personality there is in the way a certain player chooses to approach soloing over a familiar chord progression.
I just really like jazz.
Lol Janelle Monae put out a better album than all jazz musicians this decade.
I’m glad his ratings are consistent with his belief that jazz musicians pull too much shit out of their ass
But it isn't, texture layering is pretty much the entire point of the album, so it got a fair rating
His ratings are not meant to be compared across genres, idiot.
yes, thank you, that was my point
bump
Jesus his taste in jazz is embarrassing.
He’s an ok rock critic I guess but unsurprisingly he comes off looking like a fool when he tries to show off how much “diverse” music he listens to.
he started listening to rock later in life
Yeah ever notice how he doesn’t actually review any jazz albums? It’s because he doesn’t know shit about jazz and is the original rockist “jazz fan”. His history of jazz essay is also hilariously bad.
>Ornette Coleman: Free Jazz (1960)
>8.5
this is the only time he got it right
>the black saint and the sinner lady is his favorite jazz album
>gives it a 9 (nine)
oh nonono
lmao so there are around 250 albums on that list. How many of those do you think he’s actually listened to? I’m guessing less than 100 of them.
Scaruffi is actually completely deaf so 0
I kind of doubt that he’s heard more than 250 jazz albums in his whole life.
What's so unbelievable about having heard 250 jazz albums? It's not like he's been interested in music since yesterday
>wanting to be considered patrician
fuck is that true? I thought scaruffi was the ultimate patrician
I’m pretty sure he admitted somewhere that he hadn’t heard all the jazz albums on his best of lists but just put them there based on how important he thinks they are and some other arbitrary bullshit
>Sun Ra
John Coltrane
>Ornette Coleman
Sun Ra
>John Coltrane
Ornette Coleman
>Sun Ra
John Coltrane
>Ornette Coleman
Sun Ra
>John Coltrane
Ornette Coleman
There are already huge catalogues of jazz critiques that are pretty much perfect, why would anyone review classic jazz albums that have been sufficiently reviewed already? You clearly don't know shit about jazz if you're this desperate for reviews.
big if true
>desperate for reviews
lmao I just think it’s funny how he can’t even type a coherent paragraph to defend his opinions
lmao you seem like a smart dude haha, gimme some patrician jazz recs

I always assumed he was a much bigger jazz fan than rock, but going off his ratings rock music has surpassed jazz every year since 1967 (except for 2002).
It’s pretty obvious he doesn’t even really listen to jazz. But he wants to seem like he listens to a lot of jazz.
big mood
my first year browsing mu i always though this guy was Conan Obrien on a bad day and i dismiised all these threads becasuse i though it was some sort of very shitty meme
/blog
Oh wow
I like jazz now
What about rock vs avant-garde?
So THIS is why all the rockists on Yea Forums act like these are the only jazz artists who exist.
Why would someone that only listens to a little bit of jazz listen to the stuff that's not considered good?
He just made these ratings dummy
Considered by whom?
If scruffy says it’s good it must be good, right? Don’t even bother listening to anything else, let alone considering for yourself whether it’s good or not.

I'm not going to listen to 100 jazz albums if the first 10 I hear are either okay or bad. Not everyone has autistic amounts of time to spend on pretending to like something.
>caring about anything more than I do is autistic!
classic cope
Its okay to care about stuff you like, but you're clearly pretending
I forgot Stan Kenton - City of Glass [1952]. Solid 8/10. Scaruffi got this one right, indeed.
If you’re so stupid that you can’t find good jazz albums to listen to without an old man telling you which ones are good then at least try some old men who at least know something about jazz like Scott Yanow or Thom Jurek.
oh, so he does consider TMR above all jazz after all. some people were thinking that he held jazz above rock so multiple jazz albums were probably better than TMR according to him. I guess that is settled
check the sidebar
scaruffi.com
The stuff he lauds about TMR are definitely executed on a higher level by TMR than by The Black Saint, it would be really confusing to me if he gave Black Saint a 10.
He will never give any album a 10. He will never state that an album is the "best album ever", because he will never listen to every album. That's his philosophy behind the 10.
Explains why hes been so quiet posting new rock ratings, I was worried he'd kicked the bucket
>Mfw Scaruffi thinks Atlantis is good
has anyone made a chart for his jazz albums?
based mingus. i kind of expected him to have a 10 though.
...
This has completely exposed him for me and i don't really think i can take him all that seriously anymore
how autistic
b-but muh textures
you guys are cute when you talk about jazz
but seriously guys. meet some jazz musicians and ask them what they like. you'll discover some great music this way
pleb critics don't understand this music
nice:)
a jazz 9 is a rock 10
a jazz 9 is a classical 7
