Hippies were based. They did whatever they wanted, didn't force others to do it as well.

At least they made good music

Not really. You're looking for this guy.

yeah man nothing really matters *slonks mid* so we should all just like chill out and be totally zen and just love one another *cleans girlfriends boyfriends jizz off of my armoire* all these archaic morals and traditions aren’t even real man *contracts HPV from my armoire*

Why do you care what they were doing? They were happy.

because he's not

Yeah, hippies were relatively apolitical and libertarian.

The protest movements of the time were a distinct thing. Jerry Garcia actually hated them and constantly talked shit on 'politicos'. Timothy Leary advised to drop out of society rather than get engaged with politics.

they aren’t happy, they’re numbed by drugs into a catatonic state

>Timothy Leary advised to drop out of society rather than get engaged with politics.
and it is still true to this day, probably even more so
if you want to live a quiet life, you should remove yourself as much as possible from the matters of the world

Still happiness.

okay...

The protest movements were a distinct thing from the psychedelic and hippie movement I mean. The protest people - Free Speech, Weather Underground, Yippies, Civil Rights, feminism - tended to be high-strung student types. The psychedelic crowd thought the protest people needed to chill the fuck out.

and how is that not the closest one can get to happiness, among this doomed, sorry excuse for intelligent life that we are ?

I quite like hippies, even now, and in some ways am kind of one myself. People mistake the psychedelic outlook for leftism. It's not the same thing. The psychedelic view is more apolitical and balanced, like Taoism or Kabbalah.

because we have the ability to actually change things for the better instead of reciting platitudes and numbing ourselves.

That said, the social movements of the 60s had much more credibility than that pseudo-progressive woke shit that passes for leftism today.

The only thing with any relevance now is environmentalism.

I'm feeling some really strong ghost-longing for that period
Never knew it, but I think I could have had a good experience in it
Probably would have died young, but at least I'd have been surrounded by like-minded people
It seems no one wants to explore their minds anymore, everyone just wants to get fucked up and never talk about how they feel
Fuck, I hate to be this "le wrong generation" faggot, and I know it would probably not have changed much, but still
It stings, even if it's just a reminder of how unhappy I am sometimes

And anti-corporatism, obviously, or at least keeping it in check. I'm actually pretty socialist as far as just state policy but not a Marxist.

Hippies represent the start of American decline.

If you're a social justice warrior you'll spend your whole life fighting to "make things better". It will be extremely difficult to achieve your goals and even if you do succeed there will always be caveats, and there will always be more problems to fix.

How do you decide what constitutes better? By what standard or values? How do you presume to have any knowledge on... well... anything, that you might have a single idea on what needs to be done and how to maintain such improvements?

But they had a point back then

for me, it depends
some can be really fucking annoying, but the philosophy is pretty awesome
too bad that it doesn't go well with modern society and expectations
and how the fuck are you going to do that? the only way to do that would be to organize and strong-arm governments and corporations into investing all their efforts in repairing the mess we've all made
and no one wants to do that, it's been proven
all people want is to whine, and moan, and weep, because it makes them feel important
well you know what? fuck that, no point in participating
I'd rather die with a needle in my arm and a smile on my face

I mean saying "I want to improve society!" / "I believe in justice!" is an empty statement. You have nothing to back it up and judging by the way social justice warriors of any stripe behave, they seem to have zero moral credibility.

read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
that's basically the blueprint for "better"

hippies weren't that at all though, they just turned consumerism into an identity

Not really? You're mistaking the fact that marketing just tries to exploit whatever trends are happening.
