What string gauges are recommended for open tuning? I always played with 10-52 but thinking that maybe something light like pic related might be better for twinkly shit?

This is a document i typed that teaches you how to play guitar and learn music theory. I promise its worth the read, recommended for all experienced players, bass players could make use of this too..

Pretty good, thanks for your work.

Here are some errors I've spotted:
> misspelled inlays as "enlays"
> "notied" instead of noticed
> degrees, not "degree's"
> "there is also other scales" should be "there are also other scales" (?)
> "conclussion" instead of conclusion
> "excersice" or some shit instead of exercise

Observations:
> does anyone actually write perfect intervals like "P5"? Usually I just see "5"
> a Perfect 1st could also be called a Unison
> skimmed through the text so I didn't notice if you pointed this out: extended chords, past the 7th, just start using the other degrees you haven't used on the lower octave; the 9th is actually a 2nd, the 11th is a 4th, the 13th is a 6th.

Last but not least, put it on pastebin or something, it's annoying and useless to require sending the link to your email address.

Use the string tension calculator.

what kind of pedal do I need to play most rock music? here's a song I want to learn and there are a song of guitar songs that I want to learn that have that same electric guitar sound.

youtube.com/watch?v=YEleXV9td_w

What kind of amp are you running? Its a pretty easy sound to get, I would recommend the Fulltone OCD with a humbucker guitar should get you there pretty easily. I would also run a boost in the chain too for more sustain without adding any extra mud. The trick is to not have too much gain or else the note clarity will suffer, almost all the Jap bands I've studied use the OCD.

Just skip to like 5 mins in this video you can hear its pretty similar:

I'm refinishing a guitar for a friend, and he wants to replace the white hardware with black hardware. I've already got a new pickguard, knobs and covers for the 2 single coil pickups, but I'm wondering if there is anyway to remove these covers on the humbucker? Whenever I try to find covers I only see the kind that are metal and have to soldered directly to the pickup, which I would be fine to do, but in every video I'm looked up for installation, the pickup in the video has actual screws that line up with the holes in the cover, whereas this pickup doesn't. Just curious if that matters or if there was some way to remove the white plastic so that it can be painted before I buy a cover that might not work with this pickup.

Attached: 20190419_113615.jpg (4032x3024, 2.94M)

Only way you can "refinish" a bare humbucker is by slapping on a metal cover. That plastic is the spool. Remember not to fuck it up.

So will kind with no holes work, since this one doesn't have the screws that fit into the holes?

How about you take 5 minutes to look up how a humbucker is built?
Try not to embarrass yourself when you deliver a finished product that is nothing but feedback and screechy noises.

That's what I'm asking here man. I only have a very small amount of experience with guitars, I'm just doing this because I like restoring/refinishing things. If I was a guitar guy, obviously I'd probably already know this stuff, but most information I find assumes I already have a decent knowledge of these inner workings. I've watched a few videos on how to install the covers, but all of them were using pickups that look a bit different than these, so I can here for a bit of clearance.

Then why the fuck are you "refinishing" a guitar in the first place?
Hand it over to someone not stupid enough to ask Yea Forums of all places how to not fuck up basic shit.

>I'm just doing this because I like restoring/refinishing things
This is 99% redoing the body and replacing plastic with new plastic. I have literally one hurdle. I have researched the process of adding a cover and will be able to do it easily, but I'm simply asking if there is any reason why this style pickup would be different in this regard to the ones used in every video I've watched. I understand that you are simply doubling down on this whole schtick because you are just conditioned to shit on anyone who has less knowledge about the subject than you, but if you aren't going to be helpful to people with little experience, why respond to them in the first place? Just post your shitty vocaroo uploads and piss off.

Tape them up and hit it with plastic paint

Like I said, hand it over to someone not likely to make an idiot out of themselves.
Consider yourself lucky people didn't tell you to dip the pickup in acid to get rid of the color.

Nah, I'll just keep digging until I find some people who haven't forgotten that they were a novice once before.

>spend money going to shows

Oh the dilemma. So many good shows in the next 2 months too

I'll be sure to post here if anyone will give me an actual answer to my question.

...

What is the best LP clone I can get for around 1k euro available in Europe?

Dean

A Les Paul for 1k euros.

look all i want are pics
have you done anything other than ask questions?
just post the pics

Painting the plastic without being able to remove it from the electronics doesn't sound like a very hot idea.

No, I've just started. All I've done so far is disassemble and order the black pieces that I know will be interchangeable. I'd be outside sanding the body today but it is rainy heavily where I am.

That's what the tape is for. It's the best answer without completely changing the pickup. If you're really careful and know what you're doing, you can remove the top flatwork and replace with black, but you run the real risk of screwing up the pickup.

Scratch that last part, I'm not thinking straight. Only options are to paint, or replace.

So a metal cover isn't compatible with thos style? That's all I'm really asking at this point. If not, I'll replace the pickup completely, as it isn't all that much more expensive.

Yes, you can put a metal cover on it. Just slip it over and solder at the bottom on both sides (pic related). You'll have to slightly enlarge the hole in the pickguard for the cover to fit through though.

Attached: remove-guitar-pickup-cover.jpg (655x253, 23K)

Just looked at the pic again. It's got solid slugs on both sides. A cover will work, but it won't look right.

I've seen covers that don't have holes in them. Will those work while also not looking off?

That, I can't say for 100% certainty, but it should. I don't see why it wouldn't. Covers are cheap, so give it a shot.

Alright. I'll try it out. I'll be sure to post some progress pics once the project gets under way.
In case it is a while before I get back, this is a black strat style guitar that is gonna be given a green ceruse finish.

Upgrade a Harley Benton.

He breaks down the coolest techniques of tons of guitarists, from Page to Prince to Satriani and Vai. Gilmour. Hammet. LOTS of different guys with different styles.

what is the purpose of having a guitar without tone pots? I was looking into getting the Lee Ranaldo JM and I noticed this.

you shape the tone on the amp instead. I always thought a lowpass filter was kind of a silly thing to put on a guitar anyway.

Because most people never even use them

They dont even need that
They can just sing normally and harmonize with the higher notes
Then again most singers suck

I am somewhat ok at classical guitar, which I've been playing for three years, but much worse at electric guitar, which I've been playing for 1 1/2 years, why is this? I thought electric guitar was supposed to be easier? The smaller space between the strings always fucks me up.

Wheres the aids monkey at i want to bully him

Go jerk off to your boss katana

Attached: deancapitated_01.jpg (750x500, 200K)

It is easier.
You're just not very good at classical guitar or guitar in general apparently.
I can basically sight read most electric guitar music because that's part of my job in order to teach it. Reading music is so formulaic and tells you everything you need to do, you can also adjust where you're playing something in order to compensate for illiterate electric guitarist's playing positions.

Great, except that Em, it needs to have E as the root instead of G so there's contrary motion between the Soprano and Bass voices.
Now you can write it down on sheet music so you can actually see the voices move and decide where to go from there.

Eewwww

I already play both two hours each per day

I don't have problems with reading music
I should also note that I'm not talking about three power chord songs because I can do that just fine, I mostly play classical/folk solo arrangements and find those much easier on a classical guitar

that way the Em inversion that is closer on the guitar to the other shapes get thrown off, and then what's the point of it

String spacing and the fact you're used to a flat fretboard.
Get a steel string acoustic for you acoustic tendencies. Makes the switch much easier.

When you guys start talking about inversions and 5ths and 3rds and shit I just blank out. I've tried to look this stuff up before and I just can't get a handle on it.
I'm a fucking computer programmer by trade, it's not like I'm a brainlet. So wtf?

how do you figure out guitar parts when there's two moving lines? the music in youtu.be/NiOgAIkdJ8A sounds really great, especially at 0:37-1:00, but I can't figure out what's going on. the bassline doesn't seem to follow the guitars closely.

Not everything done correctly is going to be easy, but what I suggested is a very common voicing in classical music.
What you wrote sounds very blocky because it's all moving the same way.

If you can't seem to make that chord change, then change D#dim to B7(our V in Em) using First Inversion since that's the function that D#dim is performing.(creating tension and then resolving to Em)

Root position (C major) is C E G
First inversion moves the C to the too of the chord, so it would not be E G C. Still a Cmajor chord but in 1st inversion

2nd inversions continues on the 1st inversion. The lowest note (now E) gets bunp to the top, so a C major chord in 2 inversion is spelled G C E

All you doing is moving the bottome note to the next octave. You can do inversions backwards as well, moving the top note down an octave, but they’ll still be called 1st/2nd inversion.

Root Position: Root on the bottom
1st inversion : 3rd of the chord is now on the bottom
2nd inversion: 5th of the chord is now the lowest pitch

Guitarists in my experience do a REALLY poor job of demonstrating it.
You should take a small college course on theory(best go through theory 2 or 3) and you'll have a WAY better handle on what to do.

Break in down into individual pitches. You could start by playing a chord and singing all the individual pitches, so your ear gets used to hearing things blocked together

This guy here again, another question
When I'm practicing something, I sometimes start playing stuff like scales or stuff like that inbetween, should I stop doing that? I'm just a bit worried about my hands getting stuck in a pattern and becoming worse at everything other than the piece I'm currently playing.

Its just the intervals. Real simple shit. Inversions aren't the same as intervals, its when you invert a chord for example. Figuring stuff becomes a lot easier when you understand intervals since then you can understand why things are major/minor/diminished/augmented as well as learning the enharmonic equivalents of scales and that.

I did something similar for another set of two guitar parts and it worked pretty well. I think the song I posted might be slightly detuned, which is annoying.

Easy as fuck to fall into a routine when you play scales, but switch it up, start skipping notes, make licks, do triplets, whatever.

This. Seriously just tyoe guitar backing tracj and try to solo to different ones in different styles. Its the best way to capture the essence or feel youre going for.

>tfw no matter how hard you try not to fall for the tube amp meme, you fall for the tube amp meme

It just sounds better.

Buy a guitar that's meant for metal or jazz so you get a flatter fretboard, for one. Dramatic fretboard radiuses like what fender offers are oriented towards what americans usually do with electric guitars - play a bunch of chords below the 12th fret and sing along with it.

Second, get used to it and sharpen your technique, making everything closer together means you can move between fretted notes faster which is important because electric guitar is normally played with a plectrum. Even guitars meant for fast solo playing will retain a 43/44mm nut width.

instaud.io/3zzQ

Damn, they're that much on Reverb too. I should start buying them and reselling them.

>Buy a guitar that's meant for metal or jazz so you get a flatter fretboard, for one.
I definitely intend to buy another one. My current one is one by Yamaha that I got for my 18th birthday, so I couldn't try it out before unfortunately (unlike my classical one), though it's not a bad guitar by any means in my opinion.

Another thing, because of this
>I already play both two hours each per day
Is that enough? I do more on some days, but that is my minimum

you could probably make these yourself for less than $100. but even though the tube itself is $12 on its own but they probably use a higher end $50 part and the rest of the cost comes from being assembled by hand by americans.

Attached: Cuda in and out.jpg (800x507, 203K)

I can buy them all day long for $100

what is the simplest easiest tube amp schematic out there?

Classical guitar fretboards are as flat as they come dipshit.
You want an electric guitar because they provide the ability to bend strings meaningfully, strings are closer together, and the action is much closer(traditional classical guitar action can be 40% higher than a standard electric guitar)

I remember the first track on Darklands is in G major, so probably standard on that one.
Some tracks on Psychocandy definitely sound tuned down half a step.

just came up with this, is it worth a shit?
instaud.io/3zD0

you literally just have to know the name of the notes on the fretboard

They say a mans music is his autobiography

It just takes a lot more effort to sight read efficiently.

Almost like guitar was not developed in a tradition where players sight-read piano music so the instrument and the notation are set a world apart. The rarity of classical guitar players who are talented sight readers of "music", versus the commonality of violinists and pianists who can sight read is a testament to this. Guitarists and troubadors used tabs before pianos could play in more than one key, and weren't normally participants in chamber music.

heres an older one that i made if youre interested instaud.io/3zDw

Can someone give me an easy 4 chord riff for chuggs?

Maxon SD9 is a great distortion pedal

It's not that awkward.
It's useful tool for knowing alternative locations to play notes and it is the ONLY meaningful way to visuallize voice movement.
Quit being a pleb and learn.

Do you know the brand Vintage?

that's a tele

Good job

I already learned but I still think it's dumb, mostly the part where it's C-major centric.

This is the correct answer

people who think sheet music is dumb for reasons like that are the kind of people that play headless guitars and nerd out over amplifier classes

>C major centric
The guitar plays really well in C, G, D, A, E, F, and Bb
The flat keys are more of a problem due to the immediate loss of open strings, but there are plenty of pieces written in those less utilized keys.

I should clarify, I meant for classical music.
Obviously when the guitar is being utilized for just chords and not polyphony, then it works well in any key.

Does anyone play these?

What's the point?

Attached: preview.jpg (1200x1200, 116K)

No I don't think people play guitars anymore

When did Alexi Laiho play gibson? Is this picture from 90's or what?

>Not realizing that the SG is the best Gibson

>not realizing that the SG is essentially two PAFs on a plank and every other PAF-equipped HH sounds exactly the same

why is it so hard to find a jazzmaster in olympic white that isnt a squier or costs $2000

If I were to appropriate a /tg/ meme, I'd say "depends on the setting". In most situations, what amp you have is the most important thing, followed by what your guitar is.

PRS.

Mustang. To fit his baby hands that stopped growing when he became a vegan at 12.

why keep playing and practicing to improve? i got an exhausting fulltime job and nobody sees me playing.

it's Liz Buckingham

Thicc just like their riffs

>Sammy calling someone else a spic
Pottery.

HAHAHA, OH WOW

we're colonized by portugal, not spain. and we sure dont look like injuns like the spanish speaking south americans

I fucking hate playing rhythm. Who even enjoys it?

anyone with a drop of testosterone on their blood

t. Leadlet

i bet im better at lead than you too, getting gud at rhythm improves the lead playing.

I bet you follow the strumming pattern of songs exactly too

that doesnt mean good rhythm playing

What do you mean?

They're comfy

Attached: 1538091073779.jpg (531x800, 96K)

do you think good rhythm playing equals following a strum pattern all over a song?

But why have strumming patterns then!

for beginners to follow

how do i bend strings i really struggle, i am afraid that i might break the string :(

Attached: 1553903691880.png (814x619, 34K)

You will break them when learning at times, the high E is the easiest to break. Make sure your strings are stretched well because otherwise they break easier and harder to bend in general. A lot of people don't stretch strings properly.

Anyway the main thing is you need to learn to hit the correct pitch of the note you are bending. If you're an earlet it might be hard to grasp but basically play the note and hear how it sounds, and then bend the note to match it so you can get used to what it should sound like. Also vibrato is a much bigger subject than just bending, you can manipulate notes in many ways with your hands.

I love my Epi

Got a question - does it matter if you only down strum once at the start of a song? Or do you have to do it twice?

learn one at a time, unless it’s all you’re doing.

John Thompson piano course is what my forst piano teacher told me to get. Pretty good stuff and climbs in difficulty appropriately

My high E breaks after 6 months of bending like a primate

I have the same one. It one of the best guitars I've ever played.

Who here works in music? Whether it’s teaching or producing, do you guys devote yourself to music or is it a hobby?

I'm not a guitar player (I play synths) but have been thinking about making my own pedals for a while now. I'm an EE student so I dont think I'd have trouble reading schematics or designing circuits, but is there any resources/advice on applying graphics, where to get the cheapest custom pcbs, or design in general? I read about water slide paper, and screen printing looks the best, but looks hard.
Also give me ideas. I know I'm going to make a stereo overdrive using a tl072 with gain, vol, tone, and blend controls.

I'm glad that kakaposter ruined these threads. They're terrible.

i imagine you start with knowing what you need, tools wise. than learn how to use those tools.

little steps and then one big leaps

how do i sound like duster

Who?

green ringer- no controls, it's just ring modulation and some super octave with its own inherent distortion. It behaves really crazy depending on what you're doing.

maybe an octa-fuzz and a guitarist with a good touch

hm-2 - super nasty thick and heavy distortion, swede death metal, some ring modulation if pushed

I'd get a crystal dagger if I wanted to throw money at a pedal.

Buy a tascam portastudio and tinker with the pitch shift. It’s literally that easy

record smashing pumpkins riffs you never learned how to play into a tape deck.

slow the recordings down 25%

>only down strum once

jack black movies, wall art, acdc covers,

higher - creed

I don't get what you're trying to say

The fuck? Gibson SGs are great guitars you dork

go be a band manager then jokelet

are you planning on doing only upstrums?

i dont because im a loser

Isn't BOSS GT-1 too small? has anyone here used it? I wanted to get a multi-fx pedal and it took my fancy, but it turns out it's not like its counterparts size-wise, in fact it's a pygmy fx unit?

One downstrum at the beginning followed by all upstrumps, syncopated with the beat is a rhythm ska trick

>cheapest pcbs
China, google will give you tons of choices. It's much cheaper to buy in bulk. Protoype with breadboard then build with vero/perf board first. Breadboards work well but sometimes the circuits sound different soldered up, usually just change some values. Sockets and trimpots work wonders when messing with bjt/fets, sometimes I'll even socket a tpot and then pull it to check the resistance once I find a sweet spot. Since you have formal knowledge you could probably figure it out on paper but a lot of the old boxes people liked came from a time when the people built them had fewer resources, not only with information but available parts. Some get their flavor from people using what they had on hand, not what would necessarily be ideal.

As far as ideas go, a lot of guys were coming up with designs to mimic pre amp sections of famous amplifiers. A lot of them used a j201 in place of a triode tube(half of a 12ax7, for example)which I guess are out of production. A lot of them sound pretty good, I sometimes read datasheets trying to find an alternative but I'm retarded and only kind of know what I'm looking at. Some kind of tap tempo delay that can alter the pitch of the repeat to say a 5th or an octave would be kind of cool, but you'd probably have to incorporate some digital aspects into that. I have seen analog tap tempo delays, and there are analog octave circuits.

I used to have a list of websites I frequented when I started. Runoffgroove had some interesting circuits, geofex has a lot of info(I believe the guy that runs it is also an EE), Beavis Audio just came back online and he has some interesting stuff and some random resources. Electrosmash has in depth breakdowns of some well known pedals, some even breaking down each part of the circuit and it's function. Kit Rae has a website detailing the history of the big muff and various clones. Look up Tim Escobedo, I don't know where his website is hosted now, he had some pretty unique ideas.

What's the best pickup configuration?

will my tele do a strat's job if i put a middle pickup on it? not having that inbetween position sound is killing my soul.

one needs to have all of them. it's like women

Attached: Fender-American-Professional-Stratocaster-and-American-Professional-Telecaster.jpg (1280x719, 102K)

Also, if you just want to get familiar with effect circuits there are blogs where people contribute vero and perf board layouts that they made up themselves. You could try making a few of those.

If you're at all interested in tube amps Rob Robinette has a pretty good site about old fenders. He built a low wattage version of a bassman using a dual triode tube as the output instead of a set of 6l6s if I remember correctly, so it's still a push pull amp.

Thats a fun song to play, I learned that last summer

Dumb question, could a jaguar and a jazzmaster fit in the same hardcase? Or would the jag end up having extra space and moving around?

If it's too loose just stuff some socks in there, I have to do the same thing with your mom.

Do it for yourself, ya big gay

I'm starting to learn music theory. Is there like a reference book with all the scales and the chords built on them?

You'd probably be better served learning your intervals, but what you're looking for does exist.
The Guitar Grimoire by Adam Kadmon has every scale you could possibly imagine, in all keys, in all positions on the neck.

where do you live

why does it matter

just wondering if you live somewhere with accessible mental health care.

just because you've had a rough go doesn't mean you have to be all melodramatic. the doctors thought I had a brain tumor for a while there, but I didn't become a sappy fucker

In what way are they fucked up lad

>hendrix didn't live long enough to develop arthritis or rsi from improper technique

maybe user should just kill himself before he reaches 30 then

You'll never be a truly great guitarist unless you die at 27

>its too late for me

well srv died at 35 so you still have a chance, but youll have to switch from 9s to 13s

Guess your only option is to develop a drinking habit, playing old guy blööz until you eventually die of cirrhosis in your 60s

i upgraded my telecaster with a 13 bucks bridge and no one can blame me

New thread

telecaster is like television, a thing of the past

You realize that everyone seems to be adopting them, right? Literally everyone right now.

Everybody wants to look retro on stage when they're posing with them.
Same reason Jazzmasters, Mustangs and the like got popular.
