sauce me senpai,
Looking for mu’s influence in genres is dumb, cuz we only really had anything to do with vaporwave.
The real legacy of mu (and rym) is the new way people consume music, and curate their own tastes and listening practices. We figured out how to use the internet to our advantage—before mu the online music world was just stumbling around on torrent sites, and MySpace. The new KIND of listener, who people have lately been cynically referring to as genre tourists but in fact have been around for a while and makes up the vast majority of Yea Forumstants and rym-ers. People who are more aware of the broader canon of music, perhaps at the expense of a depth of understanding of any particular genre. This isn’t a bad thing, though—we all understand the ebbs and flows of movements and evolution better than almost anyone from the previous generations, just because we have access to all the influential material. It’s a shift in focus, one that mu was principal in starting.
Plus there’s a ton of artists that got started cuz Yea Forums picked them up. Too many to name, but Car Seat Headrest might be the best example.
