Back in the day she had a decent sense of zeitgeist (Material Girl is annoying, but it captured that era really well) and also is a genius at marketing/self-promotion.

None of her contemporaries in the mainstream had the balls to try the things she did. She truly did push the boundaries and the 80's demographic at the time just lapped it up. Vogue was probably the fist "lace covered tits" to ever appear on U.S. Network Television ( Friday Night Videos on NBC.) Her videos were pure fap material at the time before the internet.
