Traditional folk is dirty tribesmen making their ooga-booga noises.
Folk is sad teenagers with acoustic guitars.

Noise

>folk is sad teenagers with acoustic guitars
what?

Is this true?

Folk refers to two genres of music in English. There’s the American music style called folk, that is based on older European music; and then there’s traditional and new folk music from around the world. In Finnish we refer to this as kansanmusiikki and the American genre (which is actually a subgenre of kansanmusiikki) as folk.

"Folk" has become shorthand for a certain style of popular music that draws on the Anglo-Irish traditions preserved in American folk musics, whereas the actual American folk musics (or their Anglo-Irish/Scottish precursors) would be considered traditional folk.

imagine thinking this

Art music

>American
>traditional folk
Bait

how is it art music?

how does 'american traditional folk' not make sense to you? traditional folk refers to folk music from any tradition, and every region has a tradition

It's not meant to be popular, rather a piece of abstract art, therefore art music

nigga video art isn't a movie like avengers is a movie but it is a film
noise isn't music like the beatles are music, but it is still music

based

what about emo rap ?

all music is art. if art music meant music that is art then all music would be art music. 'art music' as a term basically refers to classical music, they're practically synonymous. before pop (which refers to recorded and distributed music), when you couldn't record music, there are 2 ways of reproducing music, writing down each note (classical music), or singing it and then people remembering it and spreading it to others (folk)

>all music is art

The Art/Pop/Folk trifecta breaks down at even the most cursory explorations.

What is Chopin's music? Mozart's? Tigran Hamasyan's? Eno's? Any notated or modern adaptions of folk traditions?

Pop music is everything that is popular, or sounds like stuff that's popular

Art music is music that people make solely to express themselves, regardless of if it's supposed to sound good

Folk music is ooga booga noises

Right... except that almost every piece of music ever composed was a means of self-expression, had considerations for the auditory effect (yes, even stochastic or serialist music), was written by someone who out of necessity had to make some kind of consideration of financial means, and who necessarily drew from a long cultural and musical history.

Was Berg Pop, because Wozzeck was one of the century's most important works, and because he was the most widely-performed composer of the SVS, or was he an Art music composer, because his music is dissonant, notated, widely studied, consciously structured, and powerfully expressive?

False, there is only beat music and other music
