The bass is pretty much the only melodic instrument until the piano comes in, and the vocals are harmonizing very nicely with the bass during the chorus, you can't deny that harmony isn't a huge part of the feel of the song. During the piano sections the bass is keeping a groove so there can be more melody than in previous sections. Just listen to the song.
