Its about 50/50 with that group. On one hand you have Andreyev who is the typical pompous idiot whose been lulled into a postmodern stupor where absolutely anything intruding on the ears (or even not) can be considered music. Also you have Neely, who is so insufferable that contrarianism wasn't contrary enough for him, so he went back to reliking pop so he's contrary to the bulk of "contrarians". Oh and he malingers synesthesia.
On the other, while I don't like the music of Collier or Beato, they clearly are walking textbooks on theory. Collier has the uncanny ability to take extremely sophisticated chord substitutions and substitute them for really boring chords of similar color, you hardly even notice it unless you're an eartrician.
One will fight to protect you. The others will end you down like a rabid animal.
Choose wisely.
I like Beato but the musical education he gave his son seems like a mistake to me. The effort on the brain of developing absolute pitch as a little kid is as big or bigger than learning 2 or 3 languages, but the benefits of having absolute pitch are nowhere near as good as the benefits of speaking 3 or 4 languages. You dont even need absolute pitch to be a great musician, most don't have it.
Ask yourself what kind of person would make a Youtube channel of themselves doing nothing but talking about jazz chords and shit. You'll end up with one of these four guys probably. Not a genius, not a hack, just a guy who likes the sound of his own voice. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.
I hate this Beato abused his son meme. He's not even a Tiger parent. He quite casually introduced his son to complex music and encouraged him to play piano. There is absolutely no evidence of coercion. In fact I'm sure anyone would have loved if their parents had facilitated a musical education for them. He's empowered his son, not restrained him. Now, its possible Dylan, like Jacob will just have shitty taste and low creativity but that's not Rick's problem. Personally having grown up in an upper middle-class home, I think my parents were rather neglectful for not getting me any musical education. Now I want to make music but I really have no voice.
>typical pompous idiot whose been lulled into a postmodern stupor where absolutely anything intruding on the ears (or even not) can be considered music.
We got a low IQ. Calling backup.
>low IQ: thinking something is art because some retard spent a bunch of money on it and a bunch of other retards waxed poetic over it.
>high IQ: thinking something is art because it as a discernible logos, underlying structure and representation.
I am not saying he abused his kid. I am saying a yuppie that hires a chinese nanny to make sure his son grows up as English Chinese bilingual, has helped his son more with a far smaller effort.
The heart yearns to make music. It could give two fucks about being economically competitive in a post-global market-place, dad.
The guy on the bottom right is a total toolshed. Seen a few of his interview videos, and he comes across as a pretentious, smug douchebag
I think everybody in OP pic comes off as pretentious.
Yeah. The only thing more pretentious and obnoxious than him was fucking Peterson trying to flex his own musical muscle and ingratiating himself to receive goldboy points from Andreyev. The guy thinks Trout Mask Replica is genius. So he basically has the musical sensibilities of your average underage b&.
Trout Mask Replica is genius you subhuman.
>grug simple man. grug hear odd time signature, grug click like.
>shit tier IQ: "because it sounds good"
>low average IQ: "because it contains structure and harmony, i.e. it pleases me and I see why"
>average IQ: "because it contains structures of harmony, disharmony, and varieties of emotional colors, i.e. it makes me feel multiple things and i know why
>high average IQ: "because through taste i understand varying levels of expression and discern what is good through comparative referencing"
>gifted IQ: "facts don't care about your feelings, i.e. i know it to be objectively good"
I don't see how that differs. Good art needs discernible craftsmanship to be objectively good.
>disharmony
How is Rick pretentious? He just made a video on AC/DC and I think its the most sincere review of simple popular music I've ever seen. I don't even like AC/DC (though I have the tendency to sing "where's the fuckin' bus" to the tune of "TNT" when I really need to get somewhere). At any rate while I was watching it it made me realize what a real, totally unpretentious guy Rick is.
why do they have to be either geniuses or talentless?
i hate this type of all-or-nothing thinking.
you cant teach someone to be a great musician so i dont know what these people are claiming to be or do
Yeah, Jacob is both a genius and a hack.
>Being a boomer doesn’t make you pretentious
Yeah, Beato is totally not pretentious. I wouldn't use that word for Neely and Collier either, they're more like "over-eager". I don't know the other guy.
wheres that ignore pseudo intellectuals pic i see every time someone mentions neely
Neely is too clinical, but he's sufferable.
Fuck Collier.
Fuck Beato.
Last guy's cool.
Fuck, Neely's the worst of the bunch. At least Andreyev, being an academic exists almost entirely in a miasma of pretense and therefore has something of an excuse for his take on music. But Neely is a contrarian's contrarian and he malingers synesthesia (merely talking about an association with colors he makes in his brain; really synesthesia is more like a spontaneous hallucination).
Not if you're actually a boomer instead of a 30 year old boomer. There's nothing wrong with liking music he grew up with. How could you be this much of an ass?
neely is the fucking dictionary definition of pretentious
This. Actually he has that rare sort of pretentiousness where he doesn't even want to be seen as pretentious so he does this self-effacing bullshit. Its fucking infuriating. I guess he's just toxopozzed from his cat's farts.
>grug hear music
>"uhh, music bad"
>grug scroll into comments
>"what a genius album, revolutionary"
>"uhh, music good"
Clearly not good or inspired enough to do what they ought to be doing, which is just making good music. Most music academics I'd ever met in my years have been too caught up the circle jerk they'd been trained for that they have no spark or wonder which is what people respond to in all art in the first place.
I'm about 90% certain I could take all of them but I guess I would team up with Neely since he might be that guy who only looks like a pussy but has actually been doing some martial art since he was a kid
I like the guy on the bottom right but I can't watch his videos, his excessive blinking makes me uncomfortable. I'll usually scroll down so I only see the bottom half of his face
The blinking isn't the worst part, the dry-mouth tongue clicking sounds are.
I love the way reeds shake in the wind.
