I just finding it interesting looking at the evolution of heavy rock into stuff like black sabbath, into heavy metal, then speed, thrash, then death and black; also accounting for the increasing diversity of those genres over time and outside influences (melodic, crossover, etc). As well as the evolution of doom and it’s subgenres alongside all that

you mean the history of it or the music itself? If you don't like any of the older or newer classics (Sabbath, Candlemass, Cathedral, Electric Wizard, Reverend Bizarre) then the genre probably isn't for you. It is very 'simple' sounding I suppose, especially compared to a lot of thrash/death/black, but I enjoy it. There's definitely a lot less good to find in the genre though imo.

Plenty of early 86' Hardcore influence with great Thrash riffing. This rules.
Power Trip was and will always be a band for Hardcore kids that want a gateway to Metal.
me too, mid 80's to late 80's is the golden crossover era.

there was also a early crossover band called Powertrip back in the day, pic related.
what are some other bands like Agalloch I can listen to?
Agalloch don't have a lot of clones or anything too similar. Pillorian is a band made with the vocalist from Agalloch and they're similar, but with more metal.
You can always go for Kauan's more metal-y albums, like Sorni Nai, if you want soft metal with atmospheric elements.

Not this shit again
Hi. This is Matthew. Matthew likes cigarettes and brutal slamming death metal, and he likes to smoke cigarettes. Matthew is a bit special. Could we all give a big "HELLO MATTHEW" to our friend here? Thanks everyone.
I'm not gonna pretend to be someone I'm not. There's a reason why these albums are praised
I like most of those albums but you're just trying to stir shit up.
I'm not. Everyone always shits on my chart
throw away that cancer stick
>There's a reason why these albums are praised
Usually because they're decent and accessible. While accessible isn't a bad thing, it usually means it doesn't have a lot of unique shit going on.
I will never understand people who like Blackwater Park the most in Opeth's discog, it's their most watered down and Ghost Reveries is better in almost every aspect. It's just a bit less mainstream friendly as it has more harsh moments than Blackwater Park's mostly acoustic bits.
It just makes it seem like you've done no digging into metal at all. You've heard basically the main staples of the genre then just stopped right there.
Another example, is the Isis album good? Yes, despite what /metal/ will say. Is it as good as other albums in the genre? Fuck no, even albums you have in the same category completely blow it out of the water. Expand your horizons and shit mang.
Hello Matthew! Please don't smoke my slamfriend! It's bad for your health

good sound and love the guitar tone though
>none of them come close to albums like Paranoid or Ride the Lightning
I really fucking hate the tourist meme but this is kinda the core of the "tourist" mindset, finding the "best" album in a genre/band's discography and not allowing yourself to enjoy or explore anything else since it isn't highly praised or whatever. Sure, starting with popular/more accessible albums is a great way to get into metal, but eventually you owe it to yourself to dig into the genres you enjoy and find some different stuff.
Listening to obscure albums doesn't make you superior but only listening to popular albums kind of shows that you don't have much interest in exploring the massive catalog of music out there and just want whatever a lot of people like to be handed to you.
Pschizophrenia+too many drugs+death metal and cigarettes=MATTHEW

Good post
What are some albums that sound like their album cover? No generic wintershit pls.
none - the damp chill of life
this one seems like they've found the sound of the last album and fine tuned it really digging it atm
Mate, most people in real life haven't even heard of Pantera for Christ sake. You have no clue about what I listen to. I have heard plenty of albums that are not "entry level" and none of them are particular amazing just good.
as the fag posting this album yesterday I kinda agree
I love this album still, and I like the lack of crying now and appreciate the add of the menacing whispers and shit, but nothing quite makes me feel despair like Hypoxic or Desedirate off the last one
Lantlos - Melting Sun
not that guy but thanks mate gonna go thru this
>I have heard plenty of albums that are not "entry level" and none of them are particular amazing
How would NONE of them be amazing to you? Absolutely fucking zero?
If you've explored the genres thoroughly then I struggle to believe, but I'll accept it's possible, that not even one would blow your mind. Maybe you just like albums that simpler and more to the point? But even then the obscure stuff will still have shit like that.
I've listened to this album several times and can't remember a single note of it
then again, I don't remember most of modern metal releases
matt, please don't grow a beard if it looks like that
Listened to that the other day for the first time and it's interesting, but I have no idea if it's good.
Makes me miss the fuck out of Lord Worm's peak vocals though.

In my opinion, it is/was the most versatile Death Metal scene around. Most countries hailing from the same country tend to have the same sound (especially with the Swedish scene, almost every band tended to sound the same), but there was lots of experimentation in the Finnish scene going on and just straight up weird/obscure stuff like Demilich

what SPEAKERS do I buy?
What's your budget/listening situation? Are you looking for computer speakers or do you want to set up a dedicated listening space?
Just for my computer, I'm thinking kinda cheap between 100-200€
If you have an old amp/receiver sitting around you can get passive speakers, which are often a bit cheaper than actives (which provide their own power). If not, or if you can't source a good one off eBay or whatever, I'd suggest the Micca PB42x powered bookshelves- should be like $120 on Amazon, so that should fit your budget when converted out of Freedom Bux
Hey /metal/, what's your favorite Mercyful Fate/King Diamond album and song?
black metal room discord.gg
yeah
>Mercyful Fate
This is perhaps my favorite band of all time since I was 11 years old. I mean most of my friends (who listened metal) had their Iron Maiden phase etc. but for me it was all about King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. I really get nostalgic even talking about MF.
Back in the 90s our city had this record store which sadly does not exist anymore. It had the biggest collection around of vinyls, cds, casettes and I somewhat knew the owner. I would go there after school and just pick up random records from the shelves and the owner would let me listen the stuff, he would later sell me them on discount if I wanted to buy them.
MF had just released a year ago their "Dead Again" album, and I was a little kid back then I just pick up the album on random, but I was really hooked after listening few songs. I always have loved the "horror movie" aesthetic, the small stories of the songs.
Even though people generally think Melissa and Dont Break the Oath are probably the more essential albums of MF, that "Dead Again" album is the single most record I have probably listened more than any other album in my life. I still think it is a masterpiece, even though many MF fans might not think of it anything special.
Sorry for the wall of text, MF just triggers me so much, I generally dont have any fanboy attitudes towards any other artists but something about King Diamond/MF just gets me going.
Any MF material after Don't break the Oath isn't worth getting into
>Sorry for the wall of text
Don't be, it's a nice story
BREAKING THE LAWL
youtube.com
It's just some kids having fun, why do people feel the need to shit on this kind of video?
Well, I am a hardcore MF fan. I don't think they have made a single bad album, not even mediocre album.
King Diamond, on the other hand, has some bad albums, or albums that I do not think of nothing special, but I really think all the music Mercyful Fate produced is extremely good.
yeah well I disagree
What is that you dislike about the newer ones? If I would have to put all the albums by their ranks my list would look something like;
1) Dead Again
2) Melissa
3) In the Shadows
4) Time
5) Don't Break The Oath
6) Into The Unknown
7) 9
I personally have never understood the appeal of "Don't Break the Oath", it is a great album, but I do not consider it even top 3.

Perfectly nailed it. I sometimes browse bands on "Dungeon Synth" archives, but I gotta say that 97% of the stuff is absolute garbage.
It is perhaps the most unoriginal genre in existence, and even more oversaturated than the Bedroom Black Metal demo scene, but with Dungeon Synt people have even lower standards to start making music; with black metal you usally have to buy some sort of recording equipment; with dungeon synth you dont need anything but download few programs.

youtube.com
youtube.com
the time I banged ur mum lol rekt
I refer to an interview from Cercle Non Conforme where La Famine addresses Neige as "My Dear Neige. . ." [1] . It is obvious La Famine had feelins for Neige, but Neige was lost from Les Legions Loires because Famine was so large on French pride and nationalism as Snape was to the black arts. Neige left Les Legions Noires for the Mediterranean French Black metal circle with bands like Omega deathspell and Mutiliation. La Famine over time got more involved with the nationalism side of BM, but was still on the border as various members came and went telling him not to get involved until he finally got close to Alexei of M8L8TH. Alexei was always a troubled boy as was Tom Riddles, as he couldn't control his musical magnificence without killing or harming someone in the process. Now He has come together to front Militant Zone, the Death Eaters as they divide the nsbm community in Europe and Asia between music and motive.
