This is always what I advise anyone to do for any band, though KISS has quite an extensive back catalog. KISS Alive! which is an earlier live album or even "The Very Best Of KISS" which is a typical compilation is not a bad place to start to get a feel for what the band is all about.

KISS Alive! can be dangerous though because it can ruin the earlier albums, due to them having shit production and the Alive! versions being better. Probably best to at least listen to the first record before KISS Alive! and then going on.
