all jazz is free jazz when you have slsk
HIYOOOO
grab that jazz
Only rockists listen to free jazz
the only album called Free Jazz
for me it's Ornette Coleman. btw I'm gay. not sure if it matters
My dad used to work as a jazz critic and I've heard free jazz my whole life. I'm not even a huge fan of it, but I can share a ton of stuff
>Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come
>Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz
>John Coltrane - Ascension
>John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
>Pharaoh Sanders - Karma
>Pharaoh Sanders - Jewels of Thought
>Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity
>Albert Ayler - Ghosts
>Sun Ra - We Travel the Space Ways
>Sun Ra - Space Is The Place
I also know Archie Shepp, Steve Lacy, and Evan Parker are apparently really good, but I don't know any specific albums by them. Charles Mingus, I don't know if he's considered free jazz or not. Also it's a thing to say that "John Coltrane was the Father, Pharaoh Sanders was the Son, and Albert Ayler was the Holy Ghost" so those are the big three of free jazz (but also Ornette Coleman is really big too I guess? He seems to have started it, so I don't know why Coltrane is the Father)
Also, a ton of these guys would collaborate on stuff. If you go on their discography pages you'll see stuff about "as leader" vs "as sideman." And live albums are apparently pretty good in free jazz cause they're different (not like rock where live albums are generally considered less important).
Also be prepared for songs that are 30 fucking minutes of screeching (I'm sorry, I'm trying to help but I really really really just don't get this stuff)
Best Coleman Record in you Opinion?

Also this song has been stuck in my head for the past 20 years youtube.com
My favorite will always be The Science Fiction Sessions.
Not him or gay, tho.
Oh, another thing. There's a box set of Albert Ayler stuff called "Holy Ghost" that's apparently very good. It's a bunch of rare and unreleased recordings of him
This is John Coltrane's best record:

The whole collection they have of these are fucking marvelous.
lol not all free jazz is abrasive shit like that tho
Coltrane did have Olatunji but shit like A Love Supreme or Sunship are not abrasive at all.
>A Love Supreme

I wish I had a picture, but my dad bought a copy of that icon and it's hanging in my parents house (I'm in college away from home, so I can't go take one)
What do you think European free jazz (although this band is a super-group composed of both European and American)?
youtube.com
It sounds like freejazz-metal.
I like Euro Free Jazz
But Last Exit isn't really representative of free jazz in general, let alone just Euro stuff. It's super electric and rock influenced.
Evan Parker
truly
